The urgent ringing of a phone shattered the dead silence in

the car.

It was Sloane.

She couldn’t wait any longer and was pressing Malachi to hurry back to her.

Malachi felt as if something had seized his chest, making it

hard to breathe.

A nameless panic surged through him, and he barely registered Sloane’s words.

“Greer, she…”

“Malachi!”

Sloane’s voice sharpened on the other end of the line.

“Are you still going to let that woman lead you around by the nose? How many times has she lied to you? Haven’t you

learned your lesson?”

She quickly added, “I already asked the nurse.”

“Greer is fine, resting in her room. The doctor gave her the best painkillers, just like you asked.”

“They also assigned several aides to watch her around the

clock. Nothing is going to happen.”

Hearing that, Malachi let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d

been holding.

But the knot in his chest didn’t fully loosen.

He still felt that something was wrong.

He wanted to go back to the hospital, just to check on her.

He had known Greer for so many years. He knew how

stubborn she could be.

“…Aren’t you home yet?”

“I spent a long time picking this out. If you don’t come soon,

I’m taking it off and throwing it away.”

The woman’s coy, pouting voice quickly suppressed the

unease in his mind.

Malachi closed the car window and stepped on the gas.

Greer could wait a little longer, he thought.

She was used to waiting for him, anyway.
