Mom Came Back From the Dead to Warn Me About the Boy I Almost Chose Chapter 06

Mom spoke softly in my head. “If only he could stay this shy all the time. When he isn’t saying things that hurt people, he’s actually very likable.” 

I nodded in agreement. When I looked up, I met Leo’s 

gaze. 

His face was pale. He stared at me like he’d seen a ghost, completely ignoring Lily tugging on his sleeve. 

Mom sighed again. “When you chose him, he didn’t appreciate it. Now that you didn’t, he’s unhappy. People always realize what they’ve lost too late. Claire, don’t turn into someone like that.” 

I ignored Leo, chatted briefly with a few kids who came over to congratulate me, then slung my backpack over my shoulder and headed out. 

I had just reached the entrance when someone grabbed my backpack strap. 

I turned around. Leo stood there, his face tight with frustration. 

“Why did you pick Elias?” he demanded. “Since when are you two so close?” 

I shook his hand off. “That’s none of your business. It’s my choice who I pick as my brother.” 

Leo bit his lip. “But we’re best friends. You used to like playing with me the most.” 

I frowned. “Didn’t you say you lost your memory? That 

you only remember being friends with Lily? You even 

told me not to bother you when you two are playing. 

Remember?” 

He had said that himself. 

So why did he look so upset now, like he had lost something really important? 

Leo hesitated, his voice faltering. “Actually… I think I 

still want to be friends with you. Maybe if we spend more time together, I’ll remember things…” 

“Liar!” Mom stomped in my head, furious. “He’s still 

lying to you!” 

I didn’t want to hear any more of it. “Leo, the way you 

pretend to have amnesia is honestly ridiculous.” 

He froze, still gripping my backpack strap. “Y… you 

know?” 

I pulled my bag free. “I’ve already given you and Lily what you wanted. So stop bothering me.” 

Leo tried to follow, but Lily grabbed his arm, crying. 

Panicking, he shouted after me, “Elias isn’t even that great! Lots of kids at school don’t like him!” 

I didn’t turn back. “I can make my own judgments. I chose him, and that means he’s my brother. That’s not 

changing.” 

Leo stomped his foot in frustration. “You’ll regret 

this!” 

“I won’t,” I said, lifting my chin like a proud little 

peacock. 

Mom sounded pleased. “That’s my girl. You’re learning to stand your ground.” 

I walked by myself to the swing set and gently pushed 

off the ground. 

At some point, Elias quietly sat down on the swing 

beside me. 

“I thought you said you’d wait for me in the hall,” he 

said softly. 

I looked out at the setting sun in the distance. “Don’t you think this sunset looks just like the ones we used to 

watch after school?” 

All of us kids who grew up in the Fort Valerius residential area were in the same grade. After school, 

we often came to the playground together. 

Most of the time it was just me and Leo. On the days 

Leo didn’t feel like coming, I would swing by myself… and I would always run into Elias. 

Back then, I didn’t like him. I thought he was rude, and I hated that he spoke badly about Leo, so we argued a 

lot. 

Only when we watched the sunset together would he 

quietly sit there with me, keeping me company without saying much. 

Elias pulled two cartons of strawberry milk out of his 

backpack and handed one to me. 

He finished his in just a few gulps. 

I could tell something was on his mind. 

But I didn’t say anything first.
