Refuse to Be Your Luna’s Shadow Chapter 09

With their golden children behind bars, my father’s hair turned almost white overnight. My mother cried so hard her eyesight was permanently damaged. The Nightshade Group’s stock price crashed. The pack council called for my father’s removal.

My parents placed their last hope on me, begging me to save the pack. I slung my old backpack over my shoulder and shook my head. “You have made your choice. Now you live with it.”

“I can’t save this pack, and I won’t come back anymore. From today on, I am just Freya, not one’s replacement, and I have nothing to do with any of you.”

I bought a one-way ticket to Northern Europe.

On the way to the airport, Cassian drove like a maniac, suddenly swerving to cut off my taxi and forcing it to stop. My heart pounded as I stepped out. “Cassian, have you lost your mind?!”

Right there in the middle of the road, he dropped to one knee on the asphalt and opened a velvet ring box. A massive diamond glittered inside. His eyes were blazing, desperate and earnest.

“Freya,” he said, voice shaking, “I am not letting you leave me again.”

“Stay here, please. You’ll be my Luna, and my only mate.”

Werewolves on the sidewalk slowed down to stare. Someone started clapping. Others joined in, chanting at me to say yes. The whole scene was incredibly absurd.

“I am not staying,” I said decisively.

Shock wiped the hope from his face. In panic, he blurted out, “But… you love me! You love me, right?”

“That was before,” I cut him off. “Things are different now.”

He stared at me, unable to process it. “Why, Freya?”

“No special reason,” I said. “I just don’t love you anymore.”

He shook his head frantically, and started apologizing again, rambling, trying to slide the ring onto my finger. I yanked my hand back, took the ring, and hurled it into oncoming traffic. A truck rolled over it without slowing down, grinding diamond and gold into the road.

Cassian’s eyes went red. He stared at the crushed ring like it was his heart under those tires.

“This is where we end,” My tone was firm. “Don’t come after me again.”

I returned to the taxi without looking back and asked the driver to leave.

I arrived at the airport and boarded the plane without incident. As the aircraft soared into the sky, breaking through the clouds, and the sunlight poured in without reservation, I felt something inside me loosen.

I made myself a promise. For the rest of my life, I would never set foot in that city again.

Everything rotten could stay there, buried in its alleys and shadows, where it belonged.
