She Wore My Wedding Dress Before I Ever Did Chapter 09

When Rachel returned to Boston to close out the lease and finish moving out, Miles was already waiting outside the building.

He had lost a great deal of weight. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and he held a freshly printed wedding

plan in his hands.

The moment he saw her, he straightened.

“Rachel.”

She nodded.

“Let’s go upstairs. I don’t have much time.”

Almost none of her belongings remained in the apartment.

She opened her checklist and began going through everything they had owned together.

Miles would keep the dining table. Rachel would take the bookcase.

The security deposit would be divided proportionally, and the utilities would be settled through that day.

Miles held the new plan out to her.

“I redid everything. We can postpone the wedding. I’ll book a new venue and have another gown made for

you.”

“This time, I’ll handle every appointment, every vendor, and every detail. All you have to do is show up.”

Rachel did not take it.

She picked up a marker and crossed off the final item on her checklist.

Miles’s voice trembled.

“I really do understand what I did wrong.”

Rachel stopped.

“Miles, it was never that you didn’t know how to plan a wedding.”

She looked at him.

“You just never thought I was worth the effort.”

All the color drained from his face.

“That’s not-”

“It is.”

Rachel’s voice remained calm.

“You rentembered Vanessa’s follow-up appointments. You remembered that she got cold easily and that her

back hurt

“But my fever, my dress fittings, and every wedding appointment I handled alone could always wait.”

Miles’s eyes reddened.

“I always thought you could handle it.”

“So I’m done holding everything together.”

Silence fell over the apartment until the ticking clock was the only sound left.

When they had finished dividing everything, Rachel placed her key on the table.

Miles’s phone chimed.

He looked down and saw a payment notification for $3.47.

The note read:

[Final utilities balance.]

He stared at the tiny amount, his eyes turning red.

She would not leave even three dollars and change unresolved between them.

Rachel picked up her suitcase.

At last, Miles asked hoarsely, “Is there really no chance for us anymore?”

She stopped at the door but did not turn around.

“Miles, I’ve already called off our engagement.”

The door closed, leaving him alone in the apartment.

After that, Vanessa could no longer call Miles and expect him to come running whenever she wanted.

Miles finally understood that one person’s guilt could not be repaid with another person’s life.

He simply understood it too late.

On the day the wedding had originally been scheduled, hotel staff were clearing out the floral arrangements and signage that had already been prepared for the canceled reception.

Bundles of white roses were carried away one after another.

A staff member asked Miles, “Sir, would you like to keep any of the remaining welcome signs?”

Miles stared at the sign bearing his and Rachel’s names, his throat tightening.

“No. I don’t want any of it.”

At that same moment, Rachel stood onstage at the launch event for the Atlanta project.

She wore a sleek white dress, not a wedding gown.

There was no veil, no bouquet, and no groom showing up only after it was already too late.

The applause from the audience was thunderous.

In front of everyone, the client praised her decisiveness and flawless execution.

Rachel stood beneath the lights, smiling with quiet confidence.

She used the money from selling the wedding gown to book a flight to the coast.

That weekend, she went to the ocean alone.

The evening wind was strong, whipping the hem of her dress back and forth.

She sat on the rocks and watched a bride and groom taking wedding portraits in the distance.

The bride held up her skirt and laughed.

The groom bent down to retie her shoelace.

Rachel watched them for a while, then smiled too.

She felt neither envy nor regret.

A wedding dress had never been the happy ending a woman needed.

Being chosen without hesitation was.

And if no one could choose her that way, she would choose herself.
