My Valentine Surprise Exposed the Secret My Husband Was Hiding Chapter 03

After she hung up, his mom scrolled through her phone with a puzzled look. “Why don’t I see any photos of you two getting the marriage license on Zane’s social media?”

“That kid’s feed is all random crap. Anyone looking at it would think you two broke up.”

She held the phone up to my face. That’s when I realized Zane had another social media account.

No—the one I had pinned was probably his burner. A year of marriage and I didn’t even have his main account. Kind of pathetic, honestly.

I took her phone and scrolled through. The Zane who never posted anything had dropped over a dozen updates in the past few days. His feed was flooded with photos of him and Susie—all back shots, but you could tell just from the way they stood together. They were in love.

There was something familiar about Susie’s figure though. I’d seen it somewhere before. Then I spotted it—earlier today, he’d posted a Valentine’s Day confession.

[Eighth Valentine’s with Susie. So damn lucky.]

The photo showed them wrapped in each other’s arms under the moonlight.

I scrolled through every single post and liked them all with his mom’s phone. Then I smiled at her and said, “Great shots.”

A year of secret marriage, and the only photo I had with Zane was our courthouse wedding picture. Every time I tried to take one at home, he’d brush me off—said he didn’t like having his picture taken.

Clearly, he just didn’t like taking them with me.

I didn’t get it. If they were that in love, why did he marry me in the first place? Was it just out of some sense of obligation? Because I never asked him to be.

After dinner, his mom nudged me toward the bedroom. “Susie, you must be exhausted from the trip. Get some rest. Now that you two are officially hitched, this is your home too.”

“If you need anything, just ask. Don’t be shy.”

Before she left, she pulled out Zane’s journal and handed it to me.

I sat on the bed and opened it, curious. Pages and pages of his love story, scribbled in his handwriting.

[Today I saved a girl from some bullies at school. She’s gorgeous. I like her. From now on, she’s under my protection. No one’s ever hurting her again.]

[She thanked me today. I’m so happy. I’m going to protect her forever. I’ll be her doormat if that’s what it takes.]

Young Zane was a bit of a mess—but his feelings for Susie were real.

I kept reading, flipping through entry after entry. High school. College. All their moments together, little by little.

Honestly, their love story was touching. Even I felt something reading it. I couldn’t figure out what made them fall apart.

Before I knew it, I’d reached the last page. The date was several years after the previous entry—just a few days before we tied the knot.

[I’ve lost the person I love most. She married someone else. I don’t blame her—I just couldn’t give her what she needed. I hate myself for not being enough. Susie, I hope you find happiness.]

What?

I froze.

The infamous Susie—was already married?

Then what was she showing up as tomorrow?

His mom must not have finished this journal. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been so warm to me.
