My Mom’s Low-Cal Meals Killed Me In My Past Life Chapter 09

My Mom’s Low-Cal Meals Killed Me In My Past Life Chapter 09

I grabbed Denise’s face and forced her to look at me, my voice tearing out of my throat. “Tell me. How did my parents really die?”

A loud crash came from outside the door.

A team of police officers broke in, shattering the tense silence of the hallway.

They walked straight up to Denise and showed their badges.

“Denise Hale, we have reason to believe you’re connected to a cold-case murder investigation from eighteen years ago. You need to come with us.”

Denise trembled so violently she looked like she might fall apart. She could not get out a single

word.

Another officer walked up to Serena and said coldly.

“Serena Hale, the weight-loss biotech company under your name is suspected of illegal biological tissue harvesting and unauthorized extraction of fat cells. You need to come with us too.”

Serena collapsed to the floor like a pile of wet clay.

When they committed those crimes all those years ago, had they ever imagined this day would

come?

The neighbors helped me pack my things, bought me a bus ticket, and sent me away from that cursed apartment complex.

First, I went to St. Catherine Medical Center and asked specialists whether my body could still

return to normal.

Thankfully, the doctor told me that my rare fat-metabolism gene was still very active. As long as I stopped being injected with those drugs, my body would recover in due time.

I thanked the doctor, then returned to the rural Appalachian town where I was born.

The people there carried a gene everyone else envied.

To make sure no one else was harmed the way I had been, I suggested to the town council that all

outsiders with unclear motives should be properly identified and verified.

Three months later, Denise was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Serena had used my cells to illegally manufacture large batches of weight-loss derivatives, and she

was sentenced to ten years in federal prison.

Later, I heard that Serena’s obesity gene was far more aggressive than anyone had realized.

Her weight, which had stabilized years earlier, suddenly surged overnight, unmoored from the stolen cells that had kept her slim.

Before long, she reached 550 pounds. Complications followed one after another, and she died in prison, trapped in the very nightmare she had forced upon me.

I thought about Denise’s perfect scheme, the one she had planned eighteen years ago.

In the end, all of it had come to nothing.

She raised me into adulthood, used low-calorie meal prep as a cover, and secretly spread rumors everywhere that I was always binge-eating, making my sudden obesity seem reasonable.

Then, after she finished using me, she tried to get rid of me for good.

But fate did not bend to human calculation.

Every clue, every inconsistency, every detail that did not make sense had planted a seed of suspicion in my heart.

Since God had given me a second chance at life, I would never waste it by dying quietly.

I went to my parents’ graves and told them Denise had been sentenced.

I also told them I had taken back my real name.

Elaina Mercer.

A few fallen leaves spun in the wind before drifting softly down in front of their headstones.

It felt like they were telling me they knew.

I picked up my bag and left for somewhere far away.

I left to begin a new life.
