Before Our Divorce I Discovered My Husband Had Loved Me All Along Chapter 08

The day before homecoming, Avery asked to meet.

I’d changed over the years-smiled more, stood taller, looked better. But next to her, I still felt

small.

She arrived early, waved from her seat. Warm, friendly, gorgeous-the same as always

We’d barely spoken in three years of high school. Now we sat across a table over a man.

She broke the ice first, “Nobody remembers you, but I do. You liked Ethan back then, didn’t you?”

My coffee cup froze midway. I didn’t answer.

“Girl’s intuition,” she continued. “I saw every careful glance you stole at him.”

Shame burned-but I quashed it. Liking him wasn’t a crime. I’d done nothing wrong.

“Yes,” I said flatly. “I did.”

She blinked, then smiled wider. “Don’t worry-I’m not here to judge. Let me guess-the moment was when you got accused of stealing, right? I asked him later why he defended you. Want to know

what he said?”

I looked up, met her eyes.

She took a slow sip of coffee. “He said, ‘Who’s Maya?’ We’d just had a fight-he was in a mood and snapped at everyone. He didn’t even know you. Pure coincidence.”

She shrugged. “I get it, though. Lots of girls crushed on him-I threw away more love letters than I

can count. At least you didn’t act on it. That’s… self-aware.”

She didn’t finish the thought. Instead, “He told me you two are married.”

I already knew that. Who else would have?

“When we broke up, I asked him to wait-six years max, until I finished grad school. And you got married… six years later, right?”

Yes. Two years ago, Grandpa nudged us, we skipped the fuss, signed the papers at the courthouse.

I’d seen it as a gift from the universe. Turns out it was just Ethan settling after six years of waiting.

“I was late,” she said. “That’s on me. But when I found out it was you-I don’t know, it was complicated. For one thing, I felt bad-he shouldn’t have pulled some random classmate into our history. That’s just spiteful. And for another… I was almost relieved.”

Her pity was soft. “Honestly? I’m glad it’s you. If it were someone who could actually give me a for my money-I’d actually be worried.”

She kept smiling. But her words stung.

Something snapped in me. “Why are you really here?”

“I don’t want you to be fooled forever, Maya. As an old classmate, I couldn’t just—”

“I don’t believe you.”
