The Man Who Was My Right Ear Chapter 08

The Man Who Was My Right Ear Chapter 08

News of the canceled wedding spread anyway.

Our mutual friends’ group chat was buzzing all day.

Some asked if we’d fought.

Some told me not to rush.

Others messaged privately: “Maya Sutton was kind of out of line those last few weeks.”

I looked at the screen and didn’t reply.

That night, Gavin’s mother called.

“Vivian, I’m not trying to pressure you. I just want to ask—is there any chance for you and Gavin?”

I held my cup. “I’m sorry.”

She sighed. “You don’t need to apologize to me. Gavin really did mess up.”

“He always thought he could just turn around and you’d be there. But people can’t wait forever.”

Gavin’s voice came from her end. “Mom, who are you talking to?”

She paused for a second. “Vivian, take care of yourself.”

The call ended.

I put the phone down. My water had gone cold.

The next day, I went to the wedding planner’s to settle the final payment.

Maya Sutton was sitting in the waiting area.

“Vivian. I’ve been waiting for you.”

I didn’t slow down.

She followed. “You really are something. You canceled your wedding just like that.”

“Do you know how Gavin treats me now? He transferred me to a branch office. Happy now?”

I signed the paperwork. “I didn’t transfer you.”

“But it’s because of you.”

Her voice went sharp. “If you hadn’t played the victim, he wouldn’t feel so guilty.”

I finally looked at her. “You knew he had a fiancée from the very beginning.”

Her face shifted. “So what? You weren’t married yet.”

“We’re not getting married now either.”

She faltered. I took my receipt and walked out.

Maya Sutton raised her voice.

“You think he regrets it because he loves you that much? He just can’t stand that you left him first.”

I stopped.

She came around in front of me, laughing bitterly.

“See? Neither of us really won.”

“You held on for twenty years, and he was still attracted to me. I chased him for a month, and he ran back to you.”

I looked at her. “You’re wrong.”

“I didn’t lose to you.”

“I just stopped wanting him.”

The smile slid off her face.

The door chimed.

Gavin Morgan was standing there. He’d clearly heard.

Maya Sutton’s face went pale. “Gavin, I…”

He didn’t look at her.

His eyes were on me. “Vivian.”

I slipped the refund receipt into my bag.

“What are you here for?”

He swallowed. “I came to ask if the wedding can still be saved.”

The staff glanced awkwardly between us. “Mr. Morgan, Ms. Rhodes just finalized the refund.”

“And we’ve given your wedding date to another couple.”

Gavin’s face went white.

Maya Sutton whispered, “Gavin.”

He finally turned to her. His gaze was cold enough to chill the room.

“Maya Sutton. Didn’t I tell you before—never joke about Vivian Rhodes’s hearing?”

Her eyes welled up. “You’re blaming me now?”

His voice was low. He turned back to me. “I blame myself more.”

“Vivian. I already had her transferred.”

“The wedding can be redone. I’ll find a new venue. You can rewrite the vows. I promise, nothing will go wrong this time.”

I looked at him. “Gavin Morgan. You still don’t get it.”

“I didn’t leave because the wedding was wrong.”

“I left because the groom was.”
