He Told Me to Wait While He Was With His Cheating Ex — I Sold Our Home That Night Chapter 03

He Told Me to Wait While He Was With His Cheating Ex — I Sold Our Home That Night Chapter 03

The movers arrived that morning.

They moved in and out of the condo, their footsteps echoing through the rooms.

I removed my clothes from the closet one piece at a time until half of it stood empty.

I used to complain that the condo was too small and talk about turning the guest room into a walk-in closet.

The guest room was still filled with the new bedding I had bought, including the ivory satin duvet set I had chosen for our first home as newlyweds.

It was still sealed inside a clear zippered storage case.

I looked at it but did not open it.

Around noon, I heard the front door unlock.

By the time Julian entered, more than half the living room had already been cleared out.

Sabrina stood behind him, pulling a suitcase. She looked even paler than she had the day before.

Julian looked around the room, his voice dropping.

“What are you doing?”

I placed my keys on the coffee table.

“Julian, I’m ending this.”

He remained perfectly still.

Sabrina drew in a quiet breath.

“Julian, did I come at a bad time?”

He ignored her and stared at me.

“This is all because of Sabrina?”

I did not look at him. I only shook my head.

“It’s not just her.”

Julian’s expression tightened before he let out an incredulous laugh.

“Chloe, don’t use a breakup to force my hand.”

“You’ve always wanted to marry me, haven’t you?”

I placed the building key fob beside the keys.

“I did want to marry you before.”

Julian’s expression gradually sobered.

I picked up a cardboard box.

“I don’t anymore.”

Sabrina held on to her suitcase and gave Julian an uneasy look.

“Someone took pictures of me at the hotel. I really don’t feel safe staying there.”

Julian turned toward her without thinking.

“Then stay here.”

I stopped and made sure I had heard him correctly.

“Where did you say she could stay?”

He casually glanced toward the guest room.

“The guest room. It’s right there and ready.”

The door was open.

The ivory satin duvet set the movers had left in the corner seemed almost painfully bright against the half-empty room.

Sabrina followed his gaze.

“Wouldn’t that be awkward? I mean… those are Chloe’s things.”

Julian pushed her suitcase into the room.

“It’s fine.”

My eyes burned as I stood there.

Only after settling Sabrina’s luggage did he turn back to me.

“Go stay with your parents for a couple of days and calm down.”

I held his gaze, waiting for an answer.

“What about her?”

Julian looked both baffled and exhausted.

“Chloe, why are you suddenly making such a big deal out of everything?”

“Sabrina’s situation is different.”

Sabrina lowered her eyes.

“Maybe I should leave. I don’t want you two fighting because of me.”

Julian softened his voice.

“Don’t worry about it.”

Then he looked at me, and the familiar expression returned to his face.

“Chloe, be understanding.”

The box in my arms suddenly felt impossibly heavy.

My arms began to ache under its weight.

I set it down, walked to the guest-room door, and picked up the clear storage case containing the duvet set.

Julian grabbed my arm.

“Chloe Parker, what are you doing now?”

I looked up at him, finally letting my anger show.

“Julian, this belongs to me!”

Sabrina quickly reached toward us.

“Julian, I won’t sleep on it. I really won’t.”

Julian did not release me.

He looked at me and lowered his voice.

“Chloe, don’t make this awkward for everyone.”

I pried his fingers from my arm one by one.

“I’m not the one making things awkward.”

Julian’s expression darkened.

The movers stood by the door, not daring to come inside.

I carried the final box into the elevator.

Just as the doors were about to close, Julian ran after me.

“Chloe.”

I held down the Door Close button.

He stood outside, his chest rising and falling heavily.

“I’ll come get you in a couple of days.”

I did not answer.

After the doors closed, my phone vibrated.

A Venmo payment from Julian appeared on the screen.

The payment included a note: [Rent and moving costs. Don’t do this out of spite. Come back in a few days.]

I sent the money back.

Then I sent him a photo of the signed condo sale agreement.

Me: [No need. I sold the condo.]
