His Younger Self’s AI Loved Me More Than He Did Chapter 02

His Younger Self’s AI Loved Me More Than He Did Chapter 02

I turned off the screen and got up to go home.

On the way, I tapped on the pinned chat.

It was a dense wall of messages I’d sent over the past six months.

[Ethan, I can’t find you. Where did you go?]

[I’m sick. Can you please come back and see me?]

[Did I do something wrong? Is that why you left so suddenly?]

The screen was a one-sided conversation of green bubbles—just me talking to myself.

There was only dead silence on the other end. I didn’t scroll up any further.

I just slowly typed a few words.

[Ethan, I want a divorce.]

It was late when I got home.

The quiet apartment suddenly rang with a chime.

“Detected an important incoming call. Would you like to answer?”

The AI companion, Al, had a blue light flickering in its eyes.

I froze.

I picked up my phone.

The caller ID flashed three words: Ethan Davis.

In half a year, after thousands of unanswered calls and countless messages that sank like stones, he was finally video-calling me on his own.

I hesitated, then answered.

Ethan’s face filled the screen.

The moment he saw me, the panic in his eyes hadn’t quite faded. “Zara, why are you suddenly bringing up divorce? Everything was fine.”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

So all it took was the word divorce to make him appear.

All those groveling pleas I’d sent over six months meant nothing compared to these two words.

I asked him coldly, just three words. “Where are you?”

Ethan paused, then said quietly, “I’m still overseas.”

He rubbed his temple, feigning exhaustion. “Zara, I’m sorry for making you wait alone all this time.”

“Six months ago, I got pulled into a classified project. They took our personal phones. I just got mine back today. The second I saw your messages, I called.”

His explanation was riddled with holes. I fought to keep my voice steady. “When are you coming back?”

Ethan’s tone was vague. “Soon. Just a few loose ends. I’ll head back as soon as I’m done.”

His so-called loose ends were probably staying with Maya through labor and getting her and the baby settled.

I lowered my eyes, not wanting to look at his face anymore. “Okay. You’re busy.”

He noticed my coldness and softened his voice even more. “Zara, be good. Wait for me to come home.

I promise I won’t leave you behind like this ever again.”

He was about to say more when a woman’s voice came from his end. “Ethan, it’s time for bed…”

Ethan’s expression instantly turned flustered. “Zara, I have to deal with something urgent. Let Al take good care of you. Get some rest. I’m hanging up.”

The video cut off abruptly.

I sat frozen on the couch, gripping the now-dark phone, for a long time.

Not long after, a message came in.

It was the first one he’d sent on his own in six months.

[Zara, three days max. I’ll be back.]

I didn’t reply.

I just turned off my phone and looked at the AI companion beside me.

“Al, book me a one-way flight out of the country for three days from now.”

Al’s eyes flickered blue. “Command received. Processing… Ticket booked.”

A text with the flight info popped up on my phone.

I thought for a moment, then said, “Also, I want to order a custom AI companion—of myself.”

Al connected me to the AI company’s private line.

I only requested the basic functions and gave simple instructions.

Maya called me twice after that. I didn’t pick up.

The next morning, my phone buzzed with Ethan’s overly attentive messages.

[Zara, have you had breakfast?]

[It’s getting cold. Remember to bundle up.]

[When I’m back, you can punish me any way you want.]

Maya also sent several texts, saying she had something urgent to tell me.

I didn’t reply to a single one. I just watched Al help me pack my things.

Then evening came.

There was a sudden knock at the door.

I was puzzled.

Had Ethan come back early?
