He Picked Up Another Woman on Our Wedding Day Chapter 09

Ryan’s face went pale.

He wanted to say something more, but his phone buzzed, Shelby’s name on the screen. He glanced at it and declined the call.

A few months ago, that gesture might have made me pause. Now all I felt was quiet.

Because no matter how fast he declined that call now, the car had still stopped at her place first.

Ryan clenched his car keys. “Let me drive you back.”

I looked at the car by the curb. He stepped ahead and opened the passenger door for me—then waited by it, the door standing open.

The car was clean inside—no red ribbons, no bouquet, no jacket Shelby had left behind. But I still didn’t sit down.

That day, when it pulled up to my building, the backseat hadn’t been empty.

He looked at the route map, still trying to rewrite the first stop. I reached over, took the map from his hand, and placed it back on the passenger seat.

“Ryan.”

He looked up. I pushed the car door closed. “This isn’t the car that comes for me anymore.”

The door clicked shut. He stood there and didn’t stop me.

The route map stayed on the passenger seat, first stop facing up, the red circle heavy.

Ryan took a step forward automatically, then stopped.

The paper lifted in the wind, then settled back down. The door clicked shut, half-hiding the route map on the passenger seat.

I walked toward the community exit.

At the gate, the security guard recognized me and asked, “Ms. Moore, was that car looking for you?”

I paused. Ryan was still watching me.

The guard’s logbook was open. The previous page still showed the convoy entry—”Wedding Pickup”—with a line scratched through it. He glanced at Ryan’s car. “That one?”

I said, “No.”

When those two words came out, I heard Ryan’s breath stop. He didn’t say my name again.

The guard nodded and crossed out the line in the logbook.

I walked past the car and kept going.

The door behind me never opened again. The horn never sounded again.
