The next morning, Julian walked out of the police station.

His mother was waiting for him outside. The moment she saw him, she burst into tears.

“Julian, you can’t go looking for Evelyn again.”

“The Bennetts mean business this time.”

Julian looked terrible.

“Where is she?”

Mrs. Sterling grew agitated.

“Why are you still looking for her?”

“Mia is your legal wife now!”

Julian snapped his gaze toward her.

“She isn’t pregnant.”

His mother froze.

“What?”

His voice dropped.

“She lied to me.”

Mrs. Sterling’s lips parted, but she quickly said,

“You still married her.”

“Julian, you need to think about the bigger picture.”

“If you turn around and chase after Evelyn now, what will that do to the Sterling family’s reputation?”

Julian stopped listening. He got into his car and drove straight to the Bennett estate.

Security stopped him at the front gate.

He stood outside the wrought-iron gates, clutching a jewelry box in one hand.

Inside was the sapphire necklace.

“I want to see Evelyn.”

The guard remained expressionless.

“Ms. Bennett isn’t receiving visitors.”

“I’m Julian Sterling.”

“I’m her fiancé.”

The guard gave him a flat look.

“Ms. Bennett does not currently have a fiancé.”

The color drained from Julian’s face.

He was about to lose his temper when Grant came out through the gate.

Julian glared at him.

“Who the hell do you think you are, Grant?”

“This is between Evelyn and me.”

Grant’s voice remained calm.

“I’m the point of contact for her attorney.”

“I’m also here at Mrs. Bennett Sr.’s invitation.”

Julian scoffed.

“Drop the act.”

“You’ve been waiting for this day for a long time, haven’t you?”

Grant did not deny it.

“Yes.”

Julian’s eyes darkened.

Grant continued, “But I was waiting for her to be free.”

“Not for her to be hit, stripped in public, and left crying for help.”

Julian’s face went completely white.

I was standing beneath the covered porch.

The moment Julian saw me, his eyes lit up.

“Evelyn.”

He stepped forward, his voice trembling with urgency.

“Mia lied to me. She was never pregnant.”

“I’ve already told my attorney to prepare the divorce papers.”

“Come back to me. Please.”

I did not move.

He raised the jewelry box.

“It’s the necklace you liked.”

“I remembered.”

“It isn’t that I don’t love you. I just made a terrible mistake.”

“I thought you were stronger than she was.”

I looked at him.

“So you put the knife in someone else’s hand because you thought I wouldn’t feel it?”

Julian swallowed.

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“Evelyn, we were together for seven years.”

“You can’t erase seven years because of one day.”

I asked quietly, “How many years has it been since my mother died?”

Julian went rigid.

“You knew exactly what I was most afraid of being called.”

“You also knew how much my mother’s house meant to me.”

“But you let Mia move in and use my mother’s house to set up a nursery for the baby you thought was yours.”

“You slapped me in front of everyone.”

“And you ordered people to strip off my wedding dress.”

His face grew paler with every word.

Finally, he said hoarsely, “I never thought it would go that far.”

I laughed.

“You never thought it would go that far because you never believed I would fight back.”

Just then, Dad and my stepmother pulled up outside the gates.

Dad jumped out of the car and stormed toward us.

“Evelyn Bennett!”

“You’ve really got some nerve.”

“You called the police on the man you were supposed to marry, and now you’re having your own father investigated?”

My stepmother followed him, her eyes red.

“Evelyn, this family is already in chaos.”

“Can’t you be reasonable for once?”

“We mortgaged the house to keep the Sloan business afloat. We weren’t selling it.”

I looked at her.

“Who forged my signature?”

My stepmother’s gaze darted away.

Dad immediately stepped in front of her.

“Forged? What are you talking about?”

“I’m your father. Do you really think I’d hurt you?”
