She Stole My Future, Then Called Herself Justice Chapter 10

College life was much harder than I expected.

I had not touched a textbook in ten years.

I had so much catching up to do.

In my first Foundations of Civil Law class, the professor explained everything clearly, but I still could not keep up.

A lot of basic legal terms sounded completely foreign.

My classmates took notes furiously while I stared at a blank notebook, unable to write a single word.

In that moment, I felt inadequate for the first time in years.

Could I really do this?

Could I really catch up on the ten years that had been stolen from me?

After class, I went to the library alone.

I found the legal studies section and stared at the rows of thick law books and treatises, my chest tight.

I pulled out a Criminal Law book and opened the first page.

“Law is society’s last line of order.”

The sentence was short, but it calmed me down.

I sat in a corner of the library with that book and started reading from page one.

From that day on, I became the most noticeable student in the library.

I arrived at six in the morning and left at eleven at night when it closed.

I studied like crazy, pushing forward, trying to make up for the entire decade.

I spent every dollar I had saved from delivering on books and online courses.

In two years, I finished what most people did in four.

During my junior year in Blackstone’s accelerated legal track, I passed the state licensing exam and ranked first in my program.

When I received the results, I did not cry or laugh.

I just quietly called Mr. Whitman.

“Mr. Whitman, I did it.”

On the other end, Mr. Whitman stayed silent for a long time.

Then I heard him trying and failing to hold back his tears.

“I knew it. I always knew you could do it.”
