Lorian sat beside me on the plane.

The clouds outside were endless. White and gold in the sunlight.

His lashes cast shadows on his cheeks. His breathing was slow. He wasn’t asleep – his fingers were rubbing the leather armrest.

“So,” I said. “Were you really going to marry me instead of the groom?”

*Marry me.* The words felt strange in my mouth. Like hard candy. Sweet on the inside.

“Mm,” he said.

One syllable. No hesitation. No explanation.

But his tail found my ankle and curled around it. Once. Twice, Like a child hugging a toy.

“You reacted fast,” I said.

He’d slipped away as soon as he realized I was gone. I’d recognized him in that split-second on screen. Probably no one else had.

“You recognized me?” His tail tightened.

“Yeah.”

“How?”

“Scent.”

I looked at him. He looked at me. His dark eyes were calm. But the corner of his fraction. On a siren, that was a smile.

He didn’t ask what *time is right* meant. Or where. Or how long.
