The Night Before Our Wedding, I Replaced Myself With My Best Friend Chapter 09

Nathan couldn’t remember how he’d made it back to Millbrook.

He was a wreck, barely functioning, as he pushed open the door to the condo. Inside was a disaster

zone, shattered glass everywhere, Molly sobbing on the couch.

The moment she saw him, she rushed over and grabbed his arm.

“Nathan! You’re finally back! Do you have any idea what these past few days have been like for me? People point and whisper when I go out. Everyone online is calling me a home-wrecker!”

She clung to his arm, tilting her face up, tears streaming, hoping to squeeze some sympathy out of

him.

“Nathan, since Elena’s already gone, let’s just roll with it. You like me anyway, right? Let’s get

married. We can make this work.”

Nathan looked down at her. That face he’d once found charming and cute now made his stomach turn. He yanked his arm back so hard Molly stumbled and fell onto the couch.

“Get out,” he said flatly.

Molly blinked, stunned. “Excuse me?”

“I said get out!” His voice shot up, raw with disgust.

“If it weren’t for you, Elena would still be here! If you hadn’t pranced around playing cute all the time, I never would’ve been stupid enough to do what I did!”

Molly’s face twisted with fury. She shot to her feet and jabbed a finger at him, her voice dripping

with scorn.

“Don’t you dare play the wounded hero, Nathan! Did I force you to buy me drinks? Did I make you pick out dresses for me? You’re a hypocrite!”

“You loved the attention. You loved how I made you feel alive and wanted. Don’t pretend

otherwise!”

She didn’t stop there, tearing through his last shred of self-deception.

“You think you actually loved Elena? Please. She was your safe zone, your fallback. You kept her around for comfort while coming to me for excitement. Now that she’s walked out, you’re blaming

me?”

Nathan’s face went white. He stared at her, mouth open, but no words came.

Because she was right, every word of it.

He’d told himself he loved Elena.

He’d even made excuses, telling himself he’d only gotten close to Molly because Elena cared about

her.

But deep down, he’d loved the thrill of playing both sides. The smug satisfaction of being wanted by

two women.

He’d been so sure Elena would never leave that he’d handed his affection to someone else without a

second thought.

“Take your things and get out of my house.” Nathan closed his eyes, his voice hollow and drained.

Molly let out a cold, brittle laugh. “Fine. I’m gone. Nathan, you deserve to end up alone.”

The door slammed behind her. The condo fell into dead silence.

Nathan slid down the wall and sat on the floor, burying his face in his hands. A muffled sob escaped his throat, raw and broken.
