The Night Before Our Wedding, I Replaced Myself With My Best Friend Chapter 08

Nathan didn’t fight back. He didn’t even wipe the blood from his mouth.

He slumped against the doorframe, his legs giving out beneath him. He gripped the wood for support, head hanging low.

The man who’d always preached dignity and decorum now looked utterly broken.

“Mr. Hart, Mrs. Hart, I know I was wrong.” His voice came out hoarse, his eyes red-rimmed and

glistening.

“I really do love Elena. I never wanted to break up with her. I just… I just got used to having her

around.”

He turned to me, desperation flooding his gaze. “Elena, please forgive me. I’ll cut Molly off completely right now. I’ll put your name on the condo.”

“We’ll have another wedding, whatever dress you want, ten thousand, twenty thousand, I’ll pay it.”

I stood there, looking down at him, and felt absolutely nothing.

“Nathan.” My voice was calm, almost detached. “Do you really think that just because you’re willing to grovel and throw money around, I’ll come running back with gratitude?”

Nathan went rigid, his lips trembling. “That’s not what I meant-”

“Yes, it is.” I cut him off, my tone still even. “You didn’t get used to having me around. You got used to my compromise. You got used to me swallowing every insult.”

“You thought that no matter how much you favored Molly, no matter how much you hurt me, you could toss me a crumb of kindness afterward and I’d quietly take it all.”

His composure was crumbling, but I pressed on.

“Is that what you call love? You didn’t want a partner, you wanted a free live-in maid. A stable safety net so you could feel secure enough to chase your little romance with Molly.”

Nathan shook his head frantically, tears finally spilling over. “No! That’s not true! Elena, I can’t live without you. Just give me one more chance. One chance.”

I shook my head. “Nathan, I gave you chances. Over and over.”

“When I was curled up in pain from my period, you were out picking out a watch for Molly. When I

was excitedly trying on wedding gowns, you were helping Molly adjust her bridesmaid dress.”

“Every chance I gave you, you used it to show me exactly how little I mattered.”

I took a step back, putting distance between us.

“Go home. I don’t want those five years back. And I don’t want you.”

Then I turned, took my parents by the arms, and walked back inside.

The wooden door slammed shut in Nathan’s face, cutting off every apology, every excuse, every

last plea.
