The Night Before Our Wedding, I Replaced Myself With My Best Friend Chapter 06

Nathan’s fingers trembled as he pulled out his phone and started dialing my number.

“The number you have dialed is not in service. Please try again later.”

The cold robotic voice cut through him like a blade. He called again and again, over a dozen times, but every single one went straight to voicemail.

Inside the banquet hall, the murmurs had escalated into open mockery.

Molly stood alone on the red carpet, wilting under the contemptuous stares coming at her from every direction.

“Parading around in something flashier than the bride, clearly she was gunning for the top spot.”

“Unbelievable. Stealing her best friend’s man, and now she’s brazen enough to stand here like it’s

her day.”

“Look at her, who knows what she’s been pulling behind the scenes.”

Molly’s eyes welled up. Tears streamed down her cheeks. She hiked up her gown and rushed off the stage, grabbing Nathan’s sleeve.

“Nathan, you have to tell them! I’m not the other woman! I didn’t steal your wedding!”

Nathan was a wreck. He shook her off so violently that she stumbled, his voice raw with

uncharacteristic fury.

“Tell them what? The evidence is right there on that screen! What do you want me to say?”

He didn’t spare another glance at Molly’s sobbing figure, and didn’t respond to his parents’ frantic

questions.

He spun on his heel and bolted out of the hotel, flooring the gas pedal all the way back to our

apartment.

He clung to a desperate hope: Elena must be home.

She was just mad about what happened at the pier. She was hiding out, waiting for him to come apologize.

Once he groveled a little, said the right things, she’d forgive him. She loved him too much to walk

away.

But when he pushed open the apartment door, Nathan froze.

The place was hollow. Empty. Lifeless.

The shoe rack by the entryway sat bare. The clothes from the balcony were gone. Even my toothbrush and cup had vanished from the bathroom counter.

Then the bedroom door swung open. A realtor stepped out with a middle-aged couple.

“The lighting in this unit is the best in the building. The owner is highly motivated to sell, so we

have room to negotiate-”

The realtor spotted Nathan standing in the doorway and blinked in surprise. “Sir? Are you here to view the property too?”

Nathan’s world tilted on its axis. “What are you doing here? Who let you in?”

The realtor looked confused by his outburst. “Ms. Hart gave us the keys. She’s listed the property

with us. She said she’s already moved out and the place is ready for sale at any time.”

Sale?

Nathan stumbled backward, his shoulders slamming into the doorframe. He stared at the space

he’d called home for five years, disbelief crashing over him.

This wasn’t a tantrum. She was really gone. She hadn’t even left herself a way back.

Nathan tore down the stairs like a madman, gunned the car, and sped toward my parents’ house. He

pounded on the door for what felt like an eternity. No answer.

A neighbor lady poked her head out from across the hall, eyeing him with undisguised disdain.

“Quit banging. The Harts left for a trip yesterday, bags packed and everything. Their daughter booked them a vacation. Cape Haven, I think. Off to enjoy themselves.”

Nathan stood in the empty hallway, his blood running cold.

Cape Haven?

I hadn’t even said goodbye. No breakup speech, no closure. I’d just erased every trace of him from my world, quietly and completely.
