He Gave My Daughter’s Heart to His Mistress’s Son Chapter 06

He Gave My Daughter’s Heart to His Mistress’s Son Chapter 06

Surgery at dawn. Seven hours.

14h Coire

They let me walk beside the gurney to the OR doors. Lily was drowsy from the pre-meds, but she found my

face.

“Mommy. Is the mechanic going to fix my engine?”

Caleb leaned over the rail in his scrubs and held up his pinky. She hooked it.

“When you wake up,” he told her, “your heart’s going to purr like a kitten. Pinky-sworn.”

The doors swallowed them.

There is no way to describe seven hours like that, so I’ll describe what surrounded them: my father pacing the family lounge like a caged animal, having canceled meetings with two governors and a Senate subcommittee My mother holding my hand without speaking, her thumb moving over my knuckles in slow circles-a rhythm, I realized, she must have used when I was a baby. The two of them flanking me like a fortress I’d never had.

At hour three, a nurse came out: On bypass. Going well.

At hour five: The new heart is in.

At hour six and forty minutes, the double doors opened and Caleb walked out, pulling off his cap, and I stopped breathing entirely-

-and he smiled.

“It started beating on its own,” he said. “Before we even fully closed, Like it had been waiting for her.”

My legs gave out. My father caught me on one side, my mother on the other, and I sobbed into the silence where eleven months of terror used to live.

They let me in when she woke. Her color-I will never have words for her color. Pink. Pink. Roses-and-milk pink, the color storybook children are. She blinked at me and said, voice raspy from the tube:

“Mommy. I can hear it. It goes boom boom boom. Like a drum.”

“That’s right, bug.”

“Whose drum was it before?”

I smoothed her hair. “A very brave kid’s. And now you have to take very good care of it, forever.”

“Okay,” she said gravely, and fell back asleep, and I sat there listening to the monitor sing its steady,

miraculous song.

Caleb found me in the hallway after his post-op rounds, two coffees in hand. We sat on the floor like residents, backs against the wall, and for the first time in a year I felt my shoulders come down from around

my ears.

“You said something the night you arrived,” I said. “I keep my promises to you. I always have. What did that

mean?”

He looked into his coffee. Smiled at something twenty-eight years away.

“Ask your father about the Ashfords,” he said. “Ask him whose family had the estate next to Whitlock House. Ask who used to get caught, age six, teaching a baby girl to eat dirt in the rose garden.”

I stared at him.

“That’s all you get for now.” He stood, offered me his hand, pulled me up. He held on one second longer than he needed to. “You’ve had enough revelations for one week. Get some sleep, Aria Whitlock.”

I didn’t sleep. At 3 a.m., my phone buzzed.

A text from Grant. Then another. Then another. Eventually I stopped counting-it was a single message broken into forty pieces, four thousand words of weaponized self-pity.

Everything I did was for you… Sloane trapped me, her father owned my career… I only stayed for the access, the connections, it was all going to come back to US… I was going to leave her the moment I made department head… the heart decision destroyed me inside, I haven’t slept… Lily is my daughter, my blood, I’ll spend my life making it right… and now that you have money, we don’t even need the Hales. Think about it, Aria. Your family’s empire needs a son-in-law who understands medicine. We could run it together. I’ll divorce

Sloane tomorrow. Just say the word.

There it was. Paragraph forty. The real reason. Your family’s empire needs a son-in-law.

I read the entire thing twice, carefully.

Then I selected all forty messages, forwarded them-every word-to Sloane Hale, and blocked his number.

I slept like a baby.

By noon the next day, the whole city was watching the Hale family explode.
