He Gave My Daughter’s Heart to His Mistress’s Son Chapter 03

Richard Whitlock.

I stared at the name for a full minute, certain the app had glitched.

Everyone in American healthcare knew that name. It was carved into the lobby of half the hospitals on the East Coast. Whitlock Medical Group: two hundred and eleven hospitals, forty thousand physicians, a privately held empire worth more than some countries.

Parent/Child match: 99.99%.

It had to be a mistake. A contaminated sample. A scam. Billionaires did not turn up as the biological father of a foster kid from Ohio who’d aged out of the system with two garbage bags of clothes.

I googled his name with shaking hands—and the third result stopped my heart.

THE WHITLOCK BABY: 28 YEARS LATER, THE SEARCH CONTINUES

In 1997, eight-month-old Aria Whitlock was abducted from the family estate by a nanny later found dead. The child was never recovered. Richard Whitlock has maintained a $20 million standing reward and funds the nation’s largest missing-children DNA registry, stating in a 2021 interview: “I will look for my daughter until the day I die. After that, my money will keep looking.”

Aria.

My foster file said I’d been found abandoned at a church in Dayton with no documents. They kept the name pinned to my blanket.

Aria.

I dropped the phone.

I want to tell you I handled it gracefully. I didn’t. I sat on the floor of a hospital room next to my dying daughter and shook like a woman coming apart at the seams—because for twenty-eight years I had been nobody, and the not-being-anybody had let Grant Bennett carve me up for a decade, and now—

The phone rang. Unknown number.

I answered without speaking.

“Hello?” A man’s voice. Older. Careful, like he was holding something made of glass. “Is this… I’m sorry. The registry flagged a match tonight and I—I’ve made this call four hundred times over the years and it’s never been real, so forgive me if I—”

He stopped. Took a breath that shook.

“My name is Richard Whitlock. Twenty-eight years ago, someone took my daughter. Her name was Aria. She had a strawberry birthmark behind her left ear.”

My hand went to the spot behind my left ear—the little mark a foster mom once called my “lucky berry”—and a sound came out of me that I didn’t recognize.

“It’s there, isn’t it,” he whispered. He was crying. This man who owned two hundred hospitals was crying into the phone. “Oh my God. It’s there. Where are you? Tell me where you are and I will be there before sunrise. Tell me you’re safe. Tell me—”

“I’m not safe,” I heard myself say. “And neither is your granddaughter.”

Silence. Then his voice changed. The tears were still in it, but underneath them something hardened into steel.

“My granddaughter.”

“Her name is Lily. She’s five. She’s in heart failure at St. Augustine Memorial, and last night a donor heart that was allocated to her was taken away and given to the chairman’s grandson, and they told me if I fought it, they’d bury her case in red tape until she—” My voice broke. “Until she runs out of time. She has weeks. Maybe less.”

I heard movement on his end. Doors. Voices. A man giving orders with the phone still pressed to his face: wake up the flight crew, get Ashford out of bed, I want the Geneva team on a call in twenty minutes.

Then he came back to me, and his voice was very quiet and very calm, and it was the most frightening calm I’d ever heard.

“Aria. Sweetheart. Listen to me carefully, because I need you to understand two things.”

“Okay,” I whispered.

“The first is that no one—no one—is going to touch you or that little girl ever again.”

“And the second?”

A pause.

“St. Augustine Memorial joined the Whitlock network in a quiet acquisition three years ago. Edward Hale doesn’t know it yet, because the holding company kept my name off the paperwork.”

His voice dropped to a whisper made of ice.

“Which means the hospital that’s killing my granddaughter… belongs to me.”
