The Last Time He Touched Me Chapter 08

Kristen’s POV

After leaving Boston. I return to my small town.

Over the years, the expensive gifts Damien gave me, after being resold, amount to about eight million dollars. On top of that, the various transfers he made total another ten million.

I donate half of it to charity and deposit the rest to my account.

Together with my own savings, it is more than enough for my parents and me to live comfortably in a small

town for the rest of our lives.

After that, I find a quiet, easy job. My parents are satisfied. They are genuinely happy.

They believe I have finally settled down.

Life in a small town is slow and long. After work, when there is nothing to do, my parents start pushing me

to go on blind dates.

Eventually, I can no longer refuse.

When I arrive, the other person is already seated.

He is overweight, wearing a thick gold chain, with his polo shirt collar popped up, a typical small-town

nouveau riche.

I sit down.

“Hello.”

“I’m Derek. I run a supermarket. You work at a bank? How much do you make a month?”

“Enough to live on.”

“How much is that?” he presses. “My ex-girlfriend worked at a bank in the provincial city. She made $3,000

a month. What about you?”

I take a sip of water, “Less than that.”

He nods as if evaluating me, then begins listing conditions.

“After marriage, you’ll have to live with my mom.”

“Also, you’ll need to give her half your monthly salary. For retirement.”

I listen silently.

“The bride price is $40,000. You bring it over and we’ll use it to pay off the mortgage together.”

“We’ll have four kids. At least three of them have to be boys.”

“You’ll handle all the housework. My mom says bank jobs are easy, so you’ll have plenty of time.”

I put down my glass, about to respond, when a familiar figure appears in front of me.

It is Damien.

“Derek, right?”

The man looks confused. /

“Who are you?”

Damien speaks calmly.

“I heard everything you just said. Ms. Mercer is not suitable for you.”

“But I do have a suggestion.”

“What suggestion?” Derek asks.

“You should marry your mother.”

“She already meets all your requirements, and she does not even ask for a bride price. Very cost-efficient.”

“What the hell did you just say?”

Derek’s face turns bright red. In a fit of anger, he tries to step forward.

But then he sees Damien’s nearly 6.3 feet frame, the commanding presence of a Don, and the expensive watch on his wrist. His courage fades instantly.

He swallows his rage and storms off.

Damien and I sit across from each other in the café.

It is the first time we have seen each other in half a year. He looks thinner, more worn down than before.

I break the silence.

“What are you doing here?”

He looks at me. His throat moves as he swallows.

“Kristen, I did not know you were at the fire that day.”
