Pregnant With His Heir, He Married The Actress Instead Chapter 05

When I returned to the eighteenth floor, I went straight to the director’s office and handed in my resignation.

He let out a sigh. “Raina, if you leave immediately, they’ll dock a month’s pay. Do you really not want to think about it a little longer?”

I shook my head. “No.”

No one at the station knew about my relationship with Zayne.

If I resigned, no one would tell him.

“Raina, you’ve been here for three years. Everyone’s seen how capable you are. Once Miss Chambers goes into filming, that prime-time anchor seat will open back up, and I can move you right back into it.”

The director patted my shoulder, clearly trying to keep me.

I smiled and turned him down. “That won’t be necessary. I’m going home.”

“Home?”

“Yes. San Diego.”

He pressed, “The prime-time anchor seat at Seattle Broadcast Network is the position countless people would kill for. Are you really walking away from it?”

I smiled faintly. “I trained as a journalist, and I’ll keep working in this field. I believe that if you’re good enough, any place can be your stage.”

After leaving Seattle Broadcast Network, I took a cab back to the mansion on Queen Anne Hill.

Every corner of that house had been arranged by my own hands.

But when I looked around, I realized the only things that were truly mine were the books I had kept from college.

Everything else had been bought for me by Zayne.

The jewelry filling two walk-in closets was far too much to carry.

I didn’t want any of it anymore.

The only thing I packed was the Christmas music box he had made for me by hand in Italy on my nineteenth birthday.

As night fell, I dragged my suitcase to the door and was about to leave.

That was when Cassidy showed up at the house with two bodyguards.

She stepped in front of me and smiled with contempt. “Raina, you may have slept with Zayne for seven years, but that’s all you ever were. A toy he used to satisfy himself.”

“Did you know he chased me for half a year in college? For those six months, he brought me breakfast every morning. When I said I liked skiing, he even blew off his classes to fly with me to Whistler in Canada.”

Seeing how close it was getting to boarding time, I cut her off. “Miss Chambers—”

Before I could finish, she raised her hand and slapped me hard across the face. “You bitch. You think you get to fight me for my man? You’re not even qualified.”

In the split second I stood there stunned, Spud darted out of his cat bed, slammed into Cassidy, and let out two sharp cries.

“Where the hell did this damn cat come from?” Cassidy snapped. “How dare it run into me?”

Her brows knitted, and she kicked Spud hard.

He was sent flying nearly ten feet. He struggled back up, barely managed to stand, and then collapsed again.

Blood spilled from his mouth.

His whole body trembled as he let out a low, broken cry.

My breath stopped.

I lifted my hand to hit Cassidy back, but someone caught my wrist from behind and yanked me into his arms.

The force behind it was terrifying.

I looked up into a pair of dark, cold eyes.

“Zayne, save Spud,” I said, my voice shaking so badly it hardly sounded like mine.

Zayne glanced at Spud on the floor and gestured to the bodyguards behind him.

“Take him to the animal hospital.”

Cassidy’s eyes reddened instantly. “Zayne, that cat was trying to bite me. I got scared and kicked it by accident.”

“You’re not mad at me, are you?”

Zayne narrowed his eyes slightly and reached up to wipe away the tears at the corners of hers. “Why would I be mad at you? If a cat doesn’t behave, it needs to be taught a lesson.”

“But next time, don’t do it yourself. If you hurt your foot kicking it, I’ll feel bad.”

Cassidy looked aggrieved. “If you really cared, then you should have someone throw Raina out of Seattle.”

“She called me here on purpose just to provoke me. She’s just some out-of-town girl. What right does she have to fight me for you?”

“If the media finds out you’ve had a kept woman for seven years, our marriage alliance will be the laughingstock of the whole city.”

“I know how to handle it.”

Zayne’s expression cooled. He tipped his head toward the bodyguards behind him. “Take Miss Chambers home.”

“No.”

I tried to stop Cassidy, but Zayne dragged me into his arms, his eyes turning even darker. “Raina, didn’t I warn you not to provoke Cassidy?”

My fingernails bit into my palms. I wanted to argue back, but the second I saw the blood on the floor, a metallic taste rose in my throat.

I couldn’t get a word out.

Zayne’s gaze flicked to the suitcase on the floor, and he frowned.
“Where are you going this late?”

After Cassidy’s stunt, my flight to San Diego had already taken off.

Then I’d go on the date instead.

I pulled at the corner of my mouth. “Zayne, do you have amnesia? You set me up with Julian Leighton for eight tonight.”

His eyes darkened, and he let out a mocking laugh. “You’re bringing a suitcase to a date? Do you really think Julian is going to want you?”

“Raina, after I’ve fucked you for seven years, who else do you think would want you?”

I planted my feet and slapped him across the face with everything I had.

Something black and violent flashed through his eyes. He seized my wrist and dragged me upstairs to the bedroom on the second floor.

He moved like an animal that had lost control, throwing me onto the bed and tearing at my dress with vicious force.

I couldn’t break free. Tears poured down my face from the pain.

“Raina, why the fuck can’t you just give in for once?”

His eyes were red as he glared at me. “If you agree to stay with me, I won’t make you go on that date.”

“Except for a proper title, I can give you money and love.”

As he spoke, his burning hand shoved my legs apart with rough force.

He lowered his head to kiss me.

Then his phone rang.

It was Cassidy.

He hesitated for a second, but he still picked up.

Her voice came through the phone in tears. “Zayne, I’m scared. I can’t stop seeing the way that cat looked at me.”

“If this keeps up, my anxiety’s going to flare up again. Will you come stay with me?”

Zayne’s eyes snapped back to me. “Raina, beg me.”

“If you beg me, I’ll stay.”

I shoved him away and snapped, “Zayne, you make me sick. Get as far away from me as possible.”

A hint of amusement curled at his mouth. “Raina, you’re a terrible liar.”

“You said you were going on a date with Julian, but you packed that Christmas music box I gave you six years ago in your suitcase. Do you really like me that much?”

I was about to deny it when a cold warning flashed through his eyes.

“I’ll say this one more time. Cassidy is the love of my life.”

“If you’re going to be a kept woman, then act like one.”

“Otherwise, you won’t be able to take a single step in Seattle. I pulled you out of the gutter once, and I can throw you right back down from the top.”

My eyes burned again, and tears gathered there, but I forced them back.

I let out a mocking laugh. “Don’t worry. I’ll be on time for the date.”

Zayne clenched his jaw. “You’d better be.”

Without another glance at me, he got up and slammed the door behind him.
