Pregnant With His Heir, He Married The Actress Instead Chapter 03

After leaving the Broadcast News Division, I took out the access card Zayne had given me and used his private elevator to go straight up to the 112th floor.

By the time the elevator passed the fiftieth floor, the rain outside had grown even heavier.

The whole city was swallowed by a pounding gray curtain of water.

And just like that, I remembered the first time I ever saw Zayne.

The first time I was at my most desperate.

That was seven years ago, right after I finished the SATs and left San Diego to study at Seattle Metropolitan University.

I needed money so badly that I was tricked into a private club.

Someone forced some unknown liquor down my throat.

A group of rich boys tried to drag me into their private room.

I was crying and fighting them off when Zayne appeared.

He was dressed in a sharp suit, his face cold and hard.

A cigarette rested between his long fingers as he said in a low, rough voice, “You’re in my way.”

The rich boys let go of me immediately.

Back then, I had no idea he was the most powerful man in Seattle. I just wanted to stay alive, so I stayed close on his heels.

But the second we reached the entrance, a group of armed men came charging in to kill him.

It was the first time I had ever seen anything like that, and I was so terrified I couldn’t move.

Zayne wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me into his car.

After the tires were shot out, we were cornered at the mouth of an alley.

When we got out, he took a bullet in the back protecting me.

At the far end of the alley, Zayne slid down against the wall and gave me a calm look.

“Go.”

“If you die, I die too,” I blurted out.

Something about that must have amused him, because he let out a low laugh. “You’re not qualified to die with me.”

I was so furious I turned and ran.

I ran to a drugstore for something to stop the bleeding, then ran right back.

By then he had already passed out. I stopped the bleeding as best I could, and only after the Hale family’s men arrived did I leave and return to school.

After that night, I thought I’d never see him again.

But the next day, Zayne called me.

“Raina, will you come with me?”

“I don’t sleep around.”

“If you stay with me, then in Seattle, you won’t have to live by anyone else’s rules.”

I thought about it for a whole night before I said yes.

At the time, all I knew was that he was twenty-two, fresh back from Switzerland, and ruthless in business.

What I didn’t know was that he could be just as ruthless in bed.

When work wasn’t too busy, Zayne took me around the world to exhibitions, taught me how to find the right angle for a story, and showed me how to ride horses and play golf.

When I was stressed out over exams, he even tutored me himself.

The sense of safety and the kind of love he gave me were things I had never had before.

After my parents divorced, I had been sent to live with my aunt.

Life under someone else’s roof was never easy.

That was why, after finishing the SATs, I chose Seattle Metropolitan University, the school farthest from home.
