That whole night, I waited endlessly that night, but Renee never reached out to Finn.

Burning-hot kisses scattered across my skin. Finn was clearly in an unusually fervent mood, but I stopped him cold midway.

“I’m heading out on a mission tomorrow. Let’s call it a night.”

Finn was left visibly unfulfilled and restless. I pushed him away, turned my back to him on my own accord, and pulled the blanket tight around me.

Finn was quiet for a long moment, then let out a sigh.

“Alright.”

Soon after, the sound of running water echoed from the bathroom.

The system echoed my exact lingering concern.

“Did we burn our bridges with her tonight? Do you really think she’d just throw in the towel like that?”

“I doubt it.”

I knew Renee well enough. She’d cling to Finn till her dying breath.

The next morning broke gray and somber.

When I got up early that morning, Finn did something rare—instead of heading straight out, he sat with me at the dining table for breakfast.

The quiet clink of silverware occasionally cut through the stillness.

Finn spoke first.

” Once this assignment’s done, put in for desk duty permanently. You’re marrying me now. You don’t have to keep grinding field shifts.”

The system chattered in my head.

[Hey, hey, ask for a fried egg.]

I kept my eyes down as I cut my ham.

“Okay.”

Finn went on in a stiff, instructional tone, like he was laying down rules for an assistant.

“I’m at the office Wednesdays through Fridays. I’ll be home with you the rest of the week. I’d prefer you not drop by my workplace unannounced.”

The system whined.

[I don’t want cheese. Get me some spaghetti instead.]

I smiled faintly, unfazed.

“Sounds fine.”

Finn frowned at how easily I agreed. He watched me finish my milk, push my chair back, and stand to leave.

“Chloe.”

I glanced back.

“What?”

Finn’s gaze locked on me.

“You’ve never complied this easily with everything I say. What’s gotten into you today?”

Truth be told, I hadn’t paid attention to a word he’d just said.

“Nothing.” I smiled.

“Guess things are finally falling into place.”

Finn tugged at his tie, his mouth set in a hard line.

Anyone could see he wasn’t happy about marrying me.

I tilted my chin up.

“Hey, Finn. Say I come back in one piece.”

Finn hesitated for a beat.

“Come back whole.”

“Thanks.”

I turned and walked out.

The system huffed.

[Ugh, that was such a letdown. I really thought he’d refuse to say it.]
