The house was pitch-black when I got home.

Flicked on the lights. Sullivan was on the couch.

I was surprised. I thought he’d be at the hospital with his pregnant girlfriend.

I kicked off my shoes and headed for the bathroom

“Elara,” he said.

“Yeah?”

“About today. That guy. You have anything to say?”

“His name’s Tristan Cole. He’s my assistant.” I looked at him. “That’s it. Anything else?”

He looked away quickly, as if he was terrified I’d say something sharp and cutting, and quickly

looked away.

He didn’t push. I headed for the bathroom.

Sullivan followed. “You and him…”

I looked up. Caught his reflection in the mirror. Smiled. “Whatever you’re thinking. Yes.”

His face went pale.

“Now I get what you felt back then.” My voice was quiet.

“Back then, you had to humble yourself to win over clients. Drank until your stomach bled. I hated

how useless I felt, how I couldn’t do anything for you.”

“I wanted to dress you up. Make you look like a movie star.”

“You had two ribs broken by those thugs just to protect me. I begged God to make things easier for you.”

“Sullivan. I have regrets too.”

“When I see Tristan, I see the old you.”

“I want to help him. Protect him. I don’t want him to go through what you did.”

“Sullivan. I understand you now.”

His face was calm.

But his hand was clamped to the doorframe so tight that blood seeped from between his

knuckles.

“Back then, I was the one being unreasonable.” I apologized. “We’re even.”

“So you won’t get in my way with Tristan. Right?”

“Because now, you’re the one person who gets it.”

“Don’t worry. Tristan is a little threatened by you, but I talked him down. He won’t start trouble.”

“Just like your girl, he’s very understanding.”

Sullivan asked, “Do you love him?”

I blinked. That question caught me off guard.

“Of course not.”

“I don’t love him.”

“I just can’t help feeling for him, and wanting to make things easier for him.”
