On the ride back, Tristan was quiet.

I parked outside his building. Yet he made no move to get out, sitting frozen in silence for a long while.

“That man. He looks like me.” He turned to face me. “Can I ask you something?”

“He’s my husband. You’ve been at the company long enough. You know I’m married?”

I paused. “And it’s not that he looks like you. It’s that you look like him.”

Tristan’s mouth twitched. “So that’s it? All this, helping me, paying for everything… I’m just a replacement?”

“What answer are you looking for?” I sighed. “My husband cheated, so I found someone who looks like him for revenge?”

I laughed. “Tristan, does it really bother you?”

“Whatever my reasons, I’ve helped you. I’ve trained you. That’s real, isn’t it?”

“So why dig deeper?”

He stared at me. I could see a tangle of emotions swirling thick in his eyes-disappointment, hurt,

anger, all warring at once.

In the end, he said nothing, just flung the door open and climbed out on his own.

But he left the suits in the backseat.

I sighed, got out, and grabbed the bags.

I’d dropped him off enough times to know exactly where he lived.

But this was the first time I’d stood at his door and knocked.

Tristan answered. His eyes were red.

When he saw me, he looked away. “What are you doing here?”

“You forgot these.” I set the bags at his feet and turned to go.

He reached out, grabbed my wrist, but still wouldn’t speak.

I sighed, reached up, lifted my hand and brushed my thumb lightly at the corner of his eye.

“Your sister’s home, isn’t she? Don’t let her see you like this.”

“Don’t worry. I don’t see you as some stand-in for Sullivan. You’re you..”

“Really?”

I laughed and nodded. “Really.”
