I smiled.

“Besides, I’m leaving this city.”

“And I won’t be coming back to live here.”

My parents had already retired and settled in another city.

I’d accepted a job elsewhere.

My friends and I had promised to keep in touch and reunite someday.

And my relationship had reached its end.

This city no longer held anything for me except painful memories.

There was nothing left worth staying for.

A breeze drifted through the air.

Yet somehow it seemed strong enough to shake Ethan where he stood.

Desperately, he reached for me.

“Where are you going? I’ll go with you.”

My expression remained calm.

“No, Ethan. Don’t follow me.”

“There are too many things between us now. There’s no future for us anymore. This is over.”

“I want a life without you now.”

Ethan drove me home in silence.

The apartment I had rented temporarily was already filled with packed luggage.

Every suitcase spoke of departure.

Ethan grew even quieter.

One hand rested against the doorframe. His fingers pressed so hard they looked as if they might sink into the wood.

After a long pause, he finally found his voice.

“When are you leaving? I’ll take you to the airport.”

“Next Sunday.”

But I lied.

When Ethan received the news and rushed over, all he found was an empty apartment.

I had left early. I hadn’t waited for him.

At the airport, I was already walking through security when I heard someone running through the terminal.

Calling my name.

He ran fast.

The wind lifted the hem of his coat. Tossed his hair across his forehead.

For a moment, he looked just like the boy from years ago.

The boy who used to wait downstairs for me.

The boy who would run across campus just to bring me flowers.

I watched him searching frantically through the crowd.

The distance between us wasn’t far.

My phone even picked up his Bluetooth signal.

But I didn’t want one last goodbye.

I kept walking.

The connection weakened.

Then disappeared completely.

Ethan stopped running.

In the endless sea of people, he seemed utterly alone.

Later, I heard updates from friends.

They told me he had bought back the house I’d sold.

He filled it with things that looked exactly like the things I’d taken.

Year after year.

Outside the window, storms still came and went.

But unlike that rainy night…

I moved on.

Ethan never did.

He remained trapped in that storm forever.
