He Waited for Me at the Border, I Already Left the Country Chapter 09

He Waited for Me at the Border, I Already Left the Country Chapter 09

I walked to the window. Someone was still sitting on the bench downstairs.

Rose petals had fallen all over the ground, but he did not pick them up.

When Sienna hired hose trolls, did Adrian know?

If he had known, then he had stayed silent on purpose.

If he had not known, then after knowing Sienna for more than twenty years, he still could not see

what kind of person she was.

Either way, it was sickening.

The next day, I crossed paths with him right outside the precinct.

His voice was so hoarse it barely sounded human. “I was discharged from the Army.”

I looked at him. “What does that have to do with me?”

His eyes were bloodshot.

“Sienna and I… we ruined our lives. Isn’t that enough revenge? Elena, please, we can relocate. Move away from the base, start fresh. Over these eight years, I really did grow to love you. The

apartment… everything reminds me of you. I…”

“You don’t miss me. You miss having a live-in maid,” I snapped.

“When you slapped me, when you made me wait, when you watched me get doxxed, when my mother was lying in the ICU, where was your conscience? Adrian, stay away from me.

He stood frozen, staring at the sidewalk before choking out, “Please… don’t do this.”

I no longer had the patience to deal with him. I hailed a cab and left.

My phone buzzed with another incoming text from his number.

I didn’t even read it before hitting delete.

In our message history, the word “wait” had appeared more than three hundred times.

I never wanted to wait again.

Half a month later, I requested a transfer to the Port Avery branch office.

My mother supported me and said she would go with me.

On the day we left, Adrian somehow found out and rushed to the airport to stop me.

“Where are you going? Why didn’t you tell me? Elena, don’t leave. I know how good you were to me now. I’ll give you everything.”

He tried to push a bank card and the condo title into my hands.

I did not take them. “It’s too late.”

My mother interlocked her arm with mine, guiding me through the TSA checkpoint without a single glance backward.

As the plane leveled out above the clouds, I rested my head on her shoulder.

“Life will get better and better.”

She patted my hand. “It will.”

When we landed at the coast, the salty, humid air felt like a physical relief.

The branch office was not large, and the workload was lighter.

I rented a two-bedroom apartment near the coast, facing south. From the balcony, we could see a

small patch of ocean.

My mother sat there every day, sometimes for half the afternoon.

Later, when Sienna’s case went to court, I did not attend.

I heard she was sentenced to two years. She cut her hair short and seemed to age almost a decade.

Her parents went after Adrian, hitting and cursing him.

If he had not kept both sides dangling, their daughter would never have ended up there.

None of that had anything to do with me anymore.
