I was not sure if Sebastian had said something to Leo, but when he came home from school, he was quiet.

He did not pester me.

He did not ask me to join him.

I took a deep breath and walked toward the bathroom.

Leo stood on his little step stool, stretching on tiptoes to reach the showerhead.

He spun around at the sound of my footsteps.

“Mommy?”

I leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed awkwardly.

“Do you… need help?”

He blinked.

His whole face flushed red.

“You know about my homework?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh.”

“Uh, I can do it myself, Mommy! I am a big boy!”

But after a few tries, he still could not reach.

I hesitated, then stepped forward, grabbed the showerhead off the hook, and handed it to him.

“Thanks, Mommy!”

He panicked and reached out to wipe me down, but he ended up smearing foam all over my shoulder.

I turned slightly, avoiding Sebastian’s gaze.

I grabbed Leo’s flailing hands.

“It’s fine. Let me rinse you off.”

Footsteps sounded behind me.

But Sebastian did not come closer.

He only leaned against the vanity and watched.

After we finished, Sebastian finally stepped in.

He scooped up sopping-wet Leo and dried him off, then guided him through brushing his teeth and putting on lotion.

He looked practiced and natural, like he had been doing it all along.

“I will take Leo to bed.”

The nanny reached for him at the door, but Leo’s eyes stayed fixed on me.

Sebastian shot him a look, and he wilted a little.

“Okay, I guess…”

I could see what he wanted.

I walked over, leaned down, and kissed his small cheek.

The little boy’s eyes went wide as he clung to the nanny’s shoulder.

He covered his face with both hands, like he might actually faint from happiness.

As they carried him out, he waved frantically.

“Goodnight, Mommy! I am so happy today! So, so happy!”
