The Captain Who Flew Into Her Storm Chapter 01

The Captain Who Flew Into Her Storm Chapter 01

Three years into our secret marriage, the only messages between my husband, Callum Rhodes, and

me were clipped aviation status updates.

Whenever he flew an overnight route, he sent me two words.

[Wheels up.]

Whenever he landed, another three words followed.

[On the ground.]

Nothing more.

Each message left a dull ache in my chest.

Then, at three in the morning, Callum’s flight encountered a severe thunderstorm.

I was the air traffic controller on duty that night, and through my headset, I heard him flirting with the company’s new first officer.

“Captain Rhodes, if we make it out of this alive, how about taking me for a ride once we’re back on

the ground?”

The frequency went silent for two seconds.

Then Callum gave a low, amused laugh.

“Sure. But don’t be scared. I’ll get us down safely.”

My fingers trembled over the console.

Still, I forced myself to stay calm and guided them out of the storm.

Once his aircraft landed safely, I drove straight to the hotel where the crew was staying.

At the far end of the corridor, I found them wrapped around each other.

Callum had always been disciplined and restrained, but now he had completely lost control, like a plane veering off course.

I smiled bitterly.

I had loved Callum for eleven years, but apparently, walking away from him took only a single

moment.

i didn’t stay to confront them. I turned around and walked out of the hotel.

The predawn wind slipped beneath my collar, and the chill seemed to cut straight into my chest.

I called my manager.

“I’d like to request a transfer to tower operations at the high-elevation airport run by our

Mountain West division.”

The weather there was notoriously unpredictable, and the working conditions were harsh.

More importantly, it was far enough away that I’d never have to wait for anyone to fly home again.

The tower operations manager sounded stunned.

“Elara, are you sure you want to transfer now? Once you finish the contingency plan you’ve been working on, you’ll be eligible for promotion to deputy manager.”

“I’m sure.”

He was one of the few people at the company who knew that Callum and I were secretly married.

After a moment, he asked, “Does Captain Rhodes know? I thought the two of you were doing well.”

I had no desire to explain.

“I need a change of scenery.”

He didn’t press me and only said he’d start the paperwork as soon as possible.

When I returned home, I kicked off my flats beside the entryway cabinet. The sound was barely

audible, yet in the stillness of the apartment, it seemed unnaturally loud.

Numb, I walked into the bathroom as Callum’s flirtatious exchange with Tessa Monroe played over

and over in my head.

The tears came before I could stop them.

I turned the faucet on full blast, hoping the rush of water would drown out the sound of my sobs.

It was almost dawn when my phone finally vibrated.

Callum had sent me a message.

[On the ground.]

I stared at those words for a long time.

Before we got married, he used to send me a full minute-long voice message the moment he landed, even when he was rushing through his postflight duties.

He would always remind me not to call a cab after work because he was coming to pick me up.

Over time, all that tenderness disappeared.

All I had left were these perfunctory status reports.

I typed back: [You don’t need to check in with me anymore.]

He didn’t reply.

I placed my phone facedown on the table, pulled my suitcase from the closet, and began packing.

There wasn’t much in the apartment that truly belonged to me.

Most of what filled the apartment had been bought with Callum in mind: the model planes he loved, an electric kettle, and herbal tea for his sensitive stomach.

I had even installed a motion-sensor light by the front door so he’d never come home from a night

flight to a dark apartment.

Yet throughout our three years of marriage, Callum had spent only a handful of nights a year in this

apartment.

He was always busy flying routes, preparing for his captain upgrade, or handling matters for the flight operations department.

I used to believe he was genuinely too busy to come home.

Now I understood.

It had never been about his schedule. Once he knew I was his, he had simply stopped loving me.

I was halfway through packing when a notification appeared on the company’s internal messaging

app.

I opened it.

The previous night’s thunderstorm emergency had been selected as an exemplary safety-response case, and a company-wide operational review would be held that afternoon.

Only two presenters were listed.

Callum and Tessa.

My finger paused against the screen, and then I continued scrolling through the notice.

My name was nowhere to be found.

I had tracked the thunderstorm on radar and called the go-around at exactly the right moment.

Then I resequenced their approach three times before finally bringing them in safely.

Yet according to the announcement, I had played no part in the operation at all.

Messages began appearing in the company group chat

[Captain Rhodes and First Officer Monroe were incredible last night. I heard their coordination was textbook perfect.]

Someone quickly replied.

[It was her first major weather emergency, and she held it together. That’s seriously impressive.]

[Apparently, this afternoon’s review is going to focus on their cockpit coordination.]

I swallowed the bitterness rising in my throat and placed the last of my belongings into the

suitcase.

At that moment, my manager called again.

“Elara, your transfer has officially been approved.”

He paused before continuing.

“You’ll also need to attend this afternoon’s review.”

“Operations Control didn’t include you on the presentation list, but as the controller on duty, you’re expected to answer questions and provide supporting details.”

“Understood,” I said quietly.

After ending the call, I placed the divorce papers I had already signed on the dining table.

Then I picked up my suitcase and walked out of that cold, empty home without looking back.
