The chat went dead.

The living room fell silent too.

Chloe’s face went as white as a sheet, while my brother Ethan’s brow furrowed.

My parents looked at me with disappointment, now mixed with a kind of irritated confusion.

They probably thought I wasn’t just lazy.

I was also rude enough to embarrass their future daughter-in-law in front of a national audience.

The doorbell rang, loud and sudden.

Everyone turned toward the front door at the same time.

An older man in glasses hurried inside.

“Dr. Lewis?”

Chloe’s eyes went wide.

It was Dr. William Lewis, dean of Adler University’s School of Physics.

She had seen him once from a distance at an opening ceremony and would never mistake him.

My parents froze too.

They didn’t know who he was, but that one “Dr. Lewis” from Chloe told them everything they needed to know.

The dean of Adler’s physics school showing up at their front door in person was huge.

Whatever annoyance they had felt a moment ago vanished on the spot.

They exchanged a look, and I could see in both their eyes how thrilled they were with Chloe as their future daughter-in-law.

“Chloe is really putting the Reed family on the map,” my mom whispered to my dad, barely containing her excitement.

After a long, stunned pause, the chat exploded again.

[Did I hear that right? Dr. Lewis from Adler? In person?]

[Oh my God, even the dean showed up. Chloe is insane.]

[He must have seen the livestream and come to praise her. Her overachiever image is locked in now.]

Chloe straightened up, her most perfectly composed smile on her face.

Every camera and every light turned to the few feet of space between her and Dr. Lewis.

She had already rehearsed what she was going to say.

She knew how to express her surprise.

She knew how to humbly thank him for his recognition.

But Dr. Lewis didn’t even glance her way as he walked right past her.

Her smile froze midair.

His pace never slowed.

He strode straight toward me and stopped in front of the couch where I was curled up.

Then, under the stunned eyes of everyone in the room, he bowed deeply to me.

“Dr. Reed, I’m begging you,” he said. “Adler is prepared to offer you an endowed chair and a full research center. Please come lead our theoretical physics program.”
