The crowd immediately erupted into chaos.

“Rainfall? What does that even mean?”

“Where are we supposed to hide?”

“How bad is it going to get?”

“How long will it last?”

Questions flew in every direction.

Nobody had answers.

Groups quickly formed and scattered.

People sprinted toward nearby office buildings, apartment complexes, and anything that looked remotely safe.

Ethan kept a tight grip on Isabella’s hand as they headed north.

I started running too.

The moment I moved, an inexplicable feeling tugged at me.

South.

Every instinct I had told me that was the right direction.

So I followed it.

Thirty minutes later, I finally found what I was looking for.

A hospital.

The faded sign outside read:

Meridian Memorial Hospital

The inpatient tower rose thirty stories into the air.

High enough.

Just as I rushed through the entrance, the rain began.

At first it sounded ordinary.

Then the sky opened.

Inside the hospital, I searched every floor I could access.

I found emergency medical kits.

Bottled water.

Packaged food.

Most importantly, I discovered a backup generator that still worked.

Only then did I finally breathe a little easier.

Standing beside a window on the thirtieth floor, I looked down over the city.

The rain was biblical.

Sheets of water crashed onto the streets below.

Some students had managed to shelter inside nearby apartment buildings.

Others weren’t as lucky.

Several were still running when the storm hit.

The rain slammed into them like a freight train, knocking them off their feet.

A few were pinned to the flooded streets, unable to stand back up.

As far as I could tell, this entire world contained only one population.

Us.

Fifty Survivors.

Meanwhile, Ethan and Isabella had gotten lucky.

They had entered a shopping mall long before the storm arrived.

At the top level of the building sat a supermarket called Fresh & Choice.

The shelves were fully stocked with food, bottled water, batteries, and daily necessities.

Several couches occupied one corner of the store.

For a survival shelter, it was nearly perfect.

Ethan’s eyes lit up.
