He Broke My Heart, My Family Broke His Empire Chapter 09

The car door flew open and my brother, Wyatt, rushed out. He wrapped a warm cashmere blanket around me and lifted me from the snow into his arms, his voice shaking with barely suppressed rage.

“Clara, what the hell are you wearing? What did that bastard Ashworth do to you?”

The tension I’d held for days finally snapped, and the tears came in a raw, broken torrent.

“Wyatt, you’re finally here… I want to go home…”

Wyatt held me tight, his voice hoarse.

“I’m sorry. I should have protected you. Clara, I promise you, I will make him pay.”

Inside the car, it was like another world, warm and safe.

My body finally relaxed, a bone-deep exhaustion taking over.

When Wyatt saw the purplish-black frostbite on my hands and feet, his eyes went red.

“These hands were meant for taming wild horses, not this. Clara, what kind of life have you been living with them all these years?”

I looked out the window, my mind a blur. One year of knowing him, four years of dating, five years of marriage. In Boston, people only knew me as the crude, inelegant woman from Texas. But back home, I was known for winning the national equestrian championship.

I spoke softly.

“Wyatt, I want a divorce. Help me.”

Ten years of my life, a decade of love, ended right there.

I looked at my ruined hands and slowly closed my eyes.

At that same moment, an SUV pulled up beneath the bridge I had just left. The doors opened, and several burly men in black suits stepped out.
