I didn’t tell Mom any of that, obviously.

She had no clue what I’d done or what I’d said to Dad.

As far as she knew, I just missed my father and wanted to see him.

But after that day, the rumors online got shut down.

Dad went to my piano teacher himself and cleared everything up. He even put out a statement backing Mom:

At the same time, the person behind the whole smear campaign got exposed.

Shocker. It was the mistress.

And someone leaked the fact that Ondine was pregnant with Dad’s kid.

The internet grabbed its popcorn:

[So the first story was just a cover-up to distract from this. God, this is embarrassing. Regular families don’t even have drama this trashy.]

Dad didn’t let Ondine off easy either.

He’d thought she was docile. Loyal.

She wasn’t.

Especially once he thought about the baby he lost. His wife, alone and helpless.

It all crashed into him at once.

He’d never imagined his kind sister-in-law could be this vicious.

Whatever hold she had on him snapped.

In its place, he saw the exact kind of man he hated most.

He slapped her across the face.

“You pushed Thessaly down the stairs. You knew she was pregnant.”

“You vile, disgusting piece of work. How could you do that to her?”

The woman just laughed. A wild, unhinged laugh.

She looked like someone he’d never even met. Pure satisfaction burned in her eyes.

He slapped her again. Harder. That seemed to bring her back.

Or maybe it just made her crazier.

“Caelian, don’t you know why?”

“Because I love you too much.”

“You should be flattered. Two women, this obsessed with you. Doesn’t it make you proud?”

“You know, when Thessaly hit the ground, the look on her face was pure despair. And you? You only had eyes for me.”

“God, it’s so funny.”

Dad’s hand cracked across her face again.

“You’re insane. Completely out of your mind.”

“You killed my child, and you have the nerve to say you love me? You wretched, pathetic.”

She cackled.

“Caelian, what did I do that was so wrong?”

“All you had to do was divorce her. None of this would’ve happened.”

His smile turned dark. Dangerous.

“Divorce Thessaly? So that was your plan all along.”

“I can make your life hell in ways you haven’t even imagined. Believe me.”

“You should’ve thought about the consequences before you pulled any of this.”
