Prank Gone Wrong Chapter 07

He paused. His voice got heavier.

“You were in a coma for three months. We issued three death notifications to your family. They’ve been through hell.”

Three months.

My senior year. My AP exams. My college applications. Gone.

My mom’s control shattered. Her voice came out mangled by grief and fury.

“Those monsters! How could they do this to you!”

She could barely speak. Months of crying had wrecked her vocal cords.

“The DA is involved. I will not let them get away with this.”

My stepfather David stood at the foot of the bed. He was a gentle man. A long-haul trucker. Now his fists were clenched. His knuckles bone-white.

“The police have classified it as Aggravated Assault.” His voice was low. Dangerous. “Our lawyer has locked down all the security footage.”

“That arrogant Sinclair family lawyer tried to offer a settlement. I threw him out of my house.”

I closed my eyes. I was so tired.

Tears slipped down my cheeks. They seeped into the unhealed sutures. It burned.

Not from the physical pain.

Because my naive, stupid youth was dead.

Connor.

The boy who carried me to the clinic when I fell out of the treehouse at eight.

The boy who sneaked me his turkey at Thanksgiving because he knew I hated it.

The boy I’d loved since middle school. The boy my mom joked would marry me someday.

He turned me into a sacrifice. A prop to show off for a cruel rich girl.

Seventeen broken bones. All so he could look cool.
