On Graduation Day, I Received a Cry for Help from Ten Years Ahead Chapter 07

I did not open the door.

Outside, Ethan’s voice was low.

“Liv, I’m not asking you to let me in. Just listen to me for a few minutes, okay?”

I said nothing.

He continued.

“At the graduation dinner, after you left, Sophia said she wanted to go after you. Later, she came back and said she couldn’t catch up. I had too much to drink, so I went outside with her for air.

After that, things got out of control.”

“The times after that, I admit I didn’t push her away the way I should have. But you were always

busy then. You kept shutting me out. I never meant to hurt you.”

When he finished, I opened the door and looked at him. After only a few days apart, he looked

much more worn down, with a cautious look in his eyes.

My voice stayed flat.

“Sophia told me herself that you slept together the day I introduced you.”

“That wasn’t the graduation dinner.”

“That was junior year.”

“That was a full year ago.”

His face went pale, starting at his jaw.

I looked at him.

“Are you blaming the whole year on alcohol now?”

“Liv, I…”

I cut him off.

“You said I was busy and ignored you. I was staying up all night working on projects. Which one of those proposals wasn’t something I finished overnight? You know better than anyone who was

supposed to receive the credit in the end.”

He lowered his head and could not say a single word. I handed the ring to him.

“It was too plain. I didn’t like it.”

“But Sophia’s custom ten–carat diamond ring really was beautiful.”

His head snapped up, his pupils tightening. The panic in his eyes was clear.

I continued.

“I also know you’ve been married for a while. I found out the morning of the day you planned to

make me fall down that wooden staircase.”

His lips trembled.

“I only applied for the marriage license because she was pregnant. She cried every day, threatened

to make a scene, and I didn’t know how to get out of it.”

“Were you about to say her family forced you?”

I gave him a cold little smile.

“Her parents are dead, and her relatives avoid her. What exactly did she use to force you?”

His jaw tightened.

“Your guilt? Or the thrill of keeping a secret you couldn’t show anyone?”

His mouth opened, but no words came out.

“And that diamond ring. Did she force you to buy that too? Ethan, what did she use to make you

order a custom ten–carat diamond?”

“Liv, I can explain.”

His voice was starting to break.

“Then explain.”

I leaned against the doorframe and looked at him calmly.

He fell silent again. Several seconds passed before he forced out one sentence.

“You’re the one I’ve always loved. Sophia and I were only…”

My patience snapped.

“Does Sophia’s child carry the Walker name?”

His expression shifted in a way he could barely hide. I looked at him, my voice quiet.

“You’ve talked for this long, and have you noticed you haven’t apologized once? All you’ve done is

explain why none of it was your fault.”

“You cheated because I was too busy.”

“You married her because she was pregnant.”

“You bought the ring because she insisted.”

“So in your version, you never chose any of it. Not once. Is that right?”

He opened his mouth, but nothing came out. I waited five seconds, then stepped back inside.

“Ethan, you have no right to come here demanding explanations from me. You can’t even be honest about what you did. You make me sick.”
