No wonder she found it strange.

“Are you sure?” she asked again.

“I’m sure.”

“Okay,” Laura said, without pushing. “Study hard and don’t wear yourself out. After the test, David and I will take you out for something good.”

“Okay.”

After hanging up, I stood at the cafeteria entrance and let the sun hit my face for a while.

I let out a deep breath, then turned and went back to the classroom.

About 10 minutes later, the front door opened.

I looked up and saw Chloe walk in, followed by Tyler and Noah.

Chloe walked straight to the front of the room.

“Everyone, wake up. I need to say something.”

The people lying on their desks slowly lifted their heads and looked at her, still half-asleep.

“I need to talk to everyone about something.”

Chloe stood at the front.

“It’s about SAT weekend lodging. I went to Mr. Harris earlier and told him what everyone was thinking.”

She paused and looked around the classroom.

“Mr. Harris said the school only handles basic test-day logistics. Where we stay is up to us. If we want hotels, we can book them ourselves.”

The second she finished, the room started buzzing.

Some people looked up.

Some leaned over to whisper to their neighbors.

Some looked like they had finally seen a little hope.

“But…”

Chloe paused, her tone helpless.

“Everyone knows hotels near Ohio University aren’t cheap. Even the cheapest motels are around $150 or $160 a night, and they’re still far from the test center.”

“The decent ones closer to campus are basically $250 and up. During SAT weekend, $300 isn’t even surprising.”

When she finished, her eyes naturally moved toward me.

Not just her.

Everyone in the classroom turned to look at me.

I was lying across my desk with my chin on my arm, watching her without expression.

“Maya’s family owns a hotel.”

Chloe smiled.

“And it’s right next to Ohio University. You can walk to the test center in 5 minutes. Everyone knows Bennett Inn is really nice, and it isn’t cheap.”

She stopped there.

The room went quiet for about 2 seconds.

The atmosphere turned a little strange.

The awkward look on Chloe’s face only lasted a moment.

Soon, her gentle smile returned.

“So here’s what I was thinking.”

Her voice softened, like she was trying to make things easier for everyone.

“No one wants to sleep badly the night before the SAT. If we can stay closer, of course we’d want to.”

“Maya’s family owns Bennett Inn. Comping 2 nights shouldn’t hurt them that much, right? There are only 50 people in our class.”

“Right.”

Sophie was the first to chime in, leaning forward from the front row.

“Maya, Bennett Inn is so close to the test center. If we stay for 2 nights, it’s not like your family loses much. We’re classmates. Help us out.”

“Exactly,” Tyler added.

“Maya, you’re always so nice to everyone. Help us this time too. The SAT is important. You don’t want us bombing it because we slept like crap, do you?”

Noah cut in too.

“Yeah, Maya. Your family can cover that cost. People would really appreciate it.”

“Maya, you’re the best. Just talk to David and Laura.”

“If the rooms are open, they’re just sitting there. Might as well let classmates use them.”

“We’re not trying to freeload. We can write reviews for Bennett Inn.”

“Yeah, we can post online and promote your family’s hotel.”

One by one, they kept adding to it.

I listened to them, and the corner of my mouth slowly lifted.

I slowly sat up.

The classroom gradually went quiet.

Everyone was waiting for my answer.

Chloe stood at the front, tilting her head slightly as she watched me.

That soft smile was still on her lips.

I looked at her face.

At that smile.

Then I finally spoke.

“Sorry. Bennett Inn is already sold out.”
