Burned Out of the Moretti Name Chapter 11

Burned Out of the Moretti Name Chapter 11

He stood there with that dark look on his face, as if I was supposed to give in.

I didn’t.

“Lorenzo,” I said, “stop calling this love. You can’t stand losing control of me. That’s all this is.”

His jaw tightened.

“You thought that if you apologized, if you came after me, I’d go back to being the woman who waited for you.” I shook my head. “I won’t.”

“I’m not coming back. And I’m not changing my mind.”

He stared at me, breathing hard.

“You won’t walk away from me that easily.”

I almost laughed.

“Watch me.”

The club manager was already approaching with security.

I looked at Lorenzo and said, very evenly, “If you don’t let this end here, I’ll have them call the police.”

He didn’t move.

I turned to the manager. “Call them.”

He did.

This wasn’t Naples. He couldn’t make the problem disappear with one word. By the time the police arrived and the footage was reviewed, the damage was done. He wasn’t held for long, but he left humiliated, blood still at the corner of his mouth.

Before he went, he looked at me with something close to desperation.

“Sofia,” he said, “maybe I said it wrong, maybe I did everything wrong, but what I felt for you was real.”

“Bianca meant nothing. She was a mistake. I never meant to lose you.”

I looked at him and felt nothing I could use,

Once, those words would have shattered me.

Now they were only late.

“What’s done is done,” I said. “I’m not coming back.”

“This wasn’t a moment of anger. I thought it through.”

“You should too.”

Then I turned and left.

Behind me, I heard him say my name one last time.

I didn’t look back.

Afterward, I took Matteo to have his injuries checked. They weren’t serious. Mine were easier to hide. In the restroom, with the door locked, I stood still until the tight pain low in my abdomen eased. Later, when

I had myself examined, the doctor told me the baby was fine and that I needed rest.

I said nothing to anyone.

After that, life quieted.

Lorenzo stopped appearing in front of me. The papers came through. He signed them.

My lawyer said he had offered financial compensation and asked to send back the jewelry he had once

given me.

I refused all of it.

When I loved him, it had never been for that. I had even less use for it now.

I went back to work.

The days were full again. The project moved quickly. I made new colleagues, new routines, new habits.

Matteo stayed exactly what he had promised to be-steady, patient, never pushing. He asked me to dinner sometimes. He brought coffee when I worked too late. He never asked for more than I was willing

to give.

I didn’t know where that would lead.

I let it be.

A few months later, I gave birth to a daughter.

She was tiny and loud and stubborn from the first breath.

When I held her, everything in me went still.

At last, there was something in my life that belonged only to me.

A few days later, I got a call from a hospital.

The voice on the other end was urgent. “Are you the wife of this patient? He’s been in a serious car accident. You need to come at once.”

It took me a second to understand they meant Lorenzo.

I looked down at my daughter and said, calmly, “You have the wrong person. I’m not his wife.”

There was a pause.

“But his phone-”

“Then contact his family,” I said.

They apologized and hung up.

The room went quiet again.

I looked at my daughter’s face, touched her cheek, and let the silence settle.

Whatever happened to him after that was no longer mine to carry.

From that day on, whether Lorenzo lived or died had nothing to do with me.
