The Godfather’s Last Regret: He Never Knew Her Chapter 06

He frowned in disgust. “What’s there to be moved by? Just a loser simp who can’t take a hint.”

But he kept staring at my poster. Memories of the last ten years flashed through his mind.

Vanessa smiled wider. “Well, you’re my simp too.”

Damon wrapped an arm around her waist. “But I’m the puppy you can’t get rid of.”

Vanessa looked at my bright, smiling poster, triumphant. “Looks like even the great Bianchi heiress has something she can’t have.”

Damon took Vanessa’s hand and turned toward the nearby ballroom—the one he’d booked for their wedding.

Then he noticed a few familiar guests.

Government officials he usually worked with.

Damon walked up to them with a smile. “I was worried you’d think it was too personal if I sent invitations. I’m so glad you came on your own.”

They looked confused.

Vanessa, who’d seen these officials in the news, swelled with pride and went to greet them.

“Damon and I chose this venue specifically so we wouldn’t lower your standards. Please, come inside.”

Major political figures showing up to drink at their wedding?
That was huge. Damon had just become Don of the Rossi family. He needed connections.

But the officials panicked when Damon and Vanessa tried to usher them inside.

“Don’t get the wrong idea. We barely know Mr. Rossi. Just a few business deals.”

“We only work with the Bianchi girl’s connections.”

These were Nonno’s close friends. They knew how I’d been wronged.

They had no warmth for Damon.

“We don’t know anything about your wedding and aren’t attending it. We’re here for the Bianchi wedding.”

Damon’s face tightened. He pulled out his phone and texted me: [I didn’t think you’d bring out these big guns to warn me. But so what? Even if the whole world is against me and Vanessa, I’ll never give up.]

I’d already blocked him.

Forgot about that.

Outside the venue, Damon steadied himself. “Look, gentlemen, I think you’ve got it wrong. I called off my wedding to Sophia. Her wedding doesn’t even have a groom. You’d be wasting your time.”

The officials’ faces turned green. “Who told you there’s no groom? She’s marrying Lorenzo Vitale. We’ve known that boy since he was a kid.”

Damon sucked in a breath.

Lorenzo Vitale. The rock that had always sat on his chest.

Damon was considered the best of the younger generation in the mafia. But Lorenzo always stayed one step ahead.

A nobody adopted by the Bianchi family fifteen years ago. Before he was even an adult, he’d made hundreds of millions. Everyone called him a genius.

The only thing Damon had over him?

The Bianchi heiress had been obsessed with Damon for years.

But now they said she was marrying Lorenzo.

Damon’s heart pounded—whether from shock or rage, he didn’t know.

He shook his head. “That’s impossible. Sophia doesn’t even like Lorenzo.”

The officials looked at him like he was an adorable idiot.

In this world of self-interest, he was still going on about love.

Meanwhile, a flood of business elites walked toward my ballroom.

His and Vanessa’s ballroom had barely a handful of upper-class guests. The rest were small-timers trying to suck up to the Rossis.

Damon felt a strange ache in his chest. Restless anxiety.
