The Godfather’s Last Regret: He Never Knew Her Chapter 02

The Godfather’s Last Regret: He Never Knew Her Chapter 02

The memories with Damon flashed through my mind one by one. My final farewell to him.

We met when I was seventeen.

Nonno bypassed my hungry uncles and named me heir to the family.

But my very first weapons deal got exposed—someone claimed I’d embezzled the payment.

Damon, acting on behalf of his family, looked into it and found out someone had faked the books to set me up.

Hero saves damsel.

Cliché, but effective.

He showed up when I was seventeen and not strong enough yet.

I fell hard for that serious, meticulous, icy man.

Truth was, we had similar personalities. Both demanding. Both raised cold and elite. Both carrying the weight of our families. The world saw us as the perfect couple.

We went through a lot together.

When his mother was driven to suicide by his father’s mistress, I used the Commission to block the mistress from moving in.

When his half-brother stole his docks, I helped him open overseas routes and locked down his position.

When he was diagnosed with cancer and stuck in the ICU, I hand-wrote letters every single day and found ways to get them in.

I, who was always so stern and cold, scoured the internet for jokes. I wouldn’t send a letter unless I could laugh at it myself. Just to make him smile.

Three years of fighting cancer. I sent a thousand letters.

Hid outside his ICU room and watched him over a thousand times.

The day he was declared cancer-free, Damon wrote me back for the first time.

[My life was nothing but plain water. Then you came along and turned it into a storm.]

Life and death. Together.

Yeah. That’s a storm.

I thought no words were needed. We were each other’s destined partner.

Then Vanessa bulldozed her way between us.

The day he was discharged, she crashed into him with a bouquet of red roses and laughed. “Hey handsome, you broke my flowers. You have to pay me back.”

“These were for the love of my life. But since they’re in your hands now, you’re the love of my life!”

He frowned. But he didn’t push her away.

I didn’t know it then, but that crash… crashed right into Damon’s heart.

After that, Vanessa clung to him.

Loud public confessions. Crazy flower displays.

At first, Damon frowned and tried to avoid her.

Then he started smiling every time he saw her.

The last time, Vanessa pulled out a huge box in front of the whole school.

Damon pinched his brow and sighed. “Fine, I give up. Just don’t make a scene anymore.”

Vanessa opened the box. “What do you mean ‘give up’? I’m just giving you a Panini. Now pay up.”

Damon pulled her into a kiss. “Stop messing with me.”

Three months.

It took Vanessa three months to do what I couldn’t in three years.

After that, she loved rubbing it in my face. “I heard you two have known each other forever. Don’t tell me you’ve always seen him as some stoic guardian?”

“Let me tell you—that stone-cold killer you see? To me, he’s just a plaything.”

Damon didn’t feel insulted. He just messed up her hair. “You’d better play with me forever.”

Vanessa slapped his cheek, smug. “Do they know this untouchable god is just a puppy begging for scraps in front of me?”

Damon stared at the hickeys on her neck and grinned. “Then you’d better tell them this puppy bites.”

Vanessa fake-punched him, and they cuddled and kissed right in front of me.

She looked at me. “What about your ‘good partner’? I hear you’ve been through life and death together. Your families think you’re a sure thing.”

Damon’s face twisted. “I’d rather be played and dumped by a slut like you than be with someone so dull.”

My heart clenched. It hurt so much I couldn’t breathe.

He proved it, over and over. Even after Vanessa used him and threw him away a thousand times, he never looked at me twice.

He’d rather throw away his dignity, punch out Vanessa’s new boyfriend, go to war with her sugar daddies, ruin his reputation, lose everything—

Than let her go.

But that burning love didn’t keep Vanessa. “I just wanted to see what it felt like to tame the untouchable god. Got bored. Bye.”
