After I Left, He Begged on His Knees to Bring Me Home Chapter 03

My migraines came back.

It started that afternoon. The pain throbbed behind my temples like someone was pressing their fingers into my skull, and by nightfall, it hurt so badly I could barely open my eyes.

Lying in bed, I grabbed my phone and texted Griffin.

[My head’s killing me. Can you pick up some ibuprofen? We’re out.]

He replied with a simple “Okay.”

But forty minutes passed.

Every minute felt stretched thin, exhausting and unbearable.

I sent another message asking where he was.

He never replied.

When I tried calling, his phone was off.

It wasn’t until midnight that my screen finally lit up.

“Vivian was having physical therapy earlier. My phone was on silent. Are you okay?”

“There’s a pharmacy downstairs. Just go buy some yourself.”

I threw on a jacket and headed downstairs.

The elevator was empty at that hour.

In the mirrored wall, my face looked frighteningly pale.

The pharmacy was about two hundred yards from the entrance.

The wind was brutal as I walked there.

By then, the store was already closed.

A sticker on the door read 24-Hour Service.

Underneath, smaller print said [Ring bell for after-hours assistance.]

But the bell was covered by a black plastic shield and wouldn’t work no matter how many times I pressed it.

The cold wind slipped down my collar.

My head pounded so badly my whole body trembled.

When I needed him most… he was busy keeping someone else company during therapy.

In the end, I went to the ER alone.

The hallway was packed with people.

Babies cried. Patients coughed. Voices blended into one endless noise.

I stood in line alone. Saw the doctor alone. Collected my test results alone.

The report was filled with medical terms I couldn’t understand.

But one phrase stood out: [Further evaluation recommended.]

When I walked out of the exam room, I saw Griffin standing in the hallway.

A printed medical report was clenched in his hand.

The moment he saw me, he frowned.

“What are you doing here?”

“I told you I had a migraine.”

As he spoke, his eyes kept drifting to the messages Vivian was sending him.

Then he said casually, “It was that serious?”

“We didn’t have any medicine at home because you forgot to buy it.”

He froze for a second.

“Griffin, do you know why I’ve been getting migraines?”

“I’ve been sleeping in the guest room for two months because the pillow in our bedroom was too high for me. I never said anything because you’ve never thought things like that mattered.”

His fingers tightened around the medical report, crumpling the paper.

Then impatience flashed across his face.

“It’s just a headache. Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it? You’re not a child anymore.”

But he had once promised he’d take care of me for the rest of my life, and I’d believed him.

Every single time, when it came to someone else, I was the one expected to give way.

I looked into his eyes.

In the end, I said nothing.

Without waiting for an explanation, I turned around and walked away.
