“Sterling!”

Maddox lunged forward and threw a punch.

Sterling fought back.

The two men who had once been inseparable started beating each other bloody, right there on the street.

The truth was finally out.

Afterward, they pursued me even more relentlessly.

Maddox seemed to believe that if he could just explain the misunderstanding, I would come back to him.

The thought was as self-centered as ever.

Through various channels, he found out where I lived and where I was studying in London.

Then he flew over.

That afternoon, I had just finished class when I saw him standing outside the lecture hall.

It had only been a year, but he looked like a different person.

He was thinner, with dark circles under his eyes and a rough layer of stubble on his chin.

When he saw me, his eyes lit up, and he rushed toward me.

“Tessa, I know everything now. It was all my fault. I misunderstood. Can you forgive me?”

He spoke quickly, as if afraid I would disappear if he paused.

He reached out to touch my arm, but I sidestepped him.

Several of my classmates walked past, their arms full of books, glancing curiously at the scene.

I had no intention of getting into it with him here.

I looked at him as if he were a complete stranger.

“Sir, I think you have the wrong person.”

With that, I walked right past him.

I didn’t look back.

Behind me, I could hear his disbelieving voice, calling my name again and again.

Maddox didn’t give up.

For days, he waited at the university gates and outside my apartment.

He tried all the desperate, romantic gestures he had once scorned: flowers, gifts, long apology letters, even standing in the rain late into the night.

But to me, he was just another person on the street.
