The meal finally ended.

Jake went to pay.

My phone buzzed. It was Ethan from my department, texting about the school gala we were

planning.

“I just finished dinner. Heading back to campus soon-hang on.”

Ethan’s voice came through, lazy and teasing.

“Where are you? I’m heading that way. I can pick you up if it’s not out of my way.”

I almost said no.

Then I watched Jake walk back holding Elena’s hand.

Something shifted in my chest.

I gave him my location.

A brief pause on his end. Then: “Stay put. Don’t move. I’m coming.”

I hung up.

Alex raised an eyebrow. “Who’s picking you up?”

He glanced at Jake and Elena walking back arm in arm, and smirked.

“What, both of you are getting lucky tonight?”

Jake snorted, confident. “No way. Your sister’s too much of a good girl for that. There’s no-”

I cut him off.

“Yes, Alex.”

Jake froze.

Alex’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean, Lily?”

I said it sweet and clear.

“My boyfriend’s coming to get me. For school.”
