I Was His Secret Genius, Now I’m His Biggest Regret Chapter 31

What happened that rainy night spread through Kentucky on countless phone cameras, then exploded on social media.

The topic “Bourbon Giant Montgomery Suspected of IP Fraud,” paired with Ava’s cold, clear question, quickly shot up the trending list. Journalists dug up Savannah’s prior involvement in fraud, as well as her years-long ambiguous relationship with Clayton.

Montgomery Distillery’s stock price plunged. The board urgently convened a meeting and announced an independent investigation into the company’s intellectual property ownership.

Clayton was forced to leave Nashville.

Before he left, he wrote Ava a long letter and had Ethan pass it to her.

The letter was handwritten with the expensive fountain pen he usually used to sign documents. The handwriting was so neat it was almost unlike his. His signature was usually sweeping and flamboyant, but every word in this letter was written straight and hard, as if it had taken all his strength.

There was not a single defense in the letter.

He began with the day they married, writing how he had initially been drawn to her talent, and how his deep-rooted class prejudice had kept him from ever truly respecting her. He wrote of his years of neglect and coldness, of his selfish wavering between the “dignity” Savannah represented and the “value” Ava represented.

He also wrote about the cold night he had locked her in the icehouse. At that part, the handwriting suddenly grew messy, and ink spread into a small stain on the paper, as if his hand had been trembling.

At the end of the letter, he wrote:

“The children and I have begun therapy. I will bear any legal consequences in full. I know that no matter what I do, I can never make up for what I owe you.”

“I won’t disturb you again. But there is one thing I must say. I am sincerely happy that you founded Angel’s Share. You deserve to walk this path.”
