He Said He’d Marry Her, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 06

“Ethan has always seen you as a sister. And I’ll be your sister-in-law soon. I would really love to have your blessing.”

I glanced over at Daniel, who was standing a short distance away.

He stood beside the car, tall and straight, his expression gentle.

A sense of calm settled over me.

“Of course. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness together.”

Ethan was in the garden, smoking cigars with a few friends.

Every so often, his gaze flickered toward Claire and the others.

He knew they were all texting Ava.

Just like they always did.

Whenever a new woman appeared by his side, they immediately ran to tell Ava.

And then Ava would come running, crying and making a scene.

He hated it when women acted like that. It was a headache.

So he’d always used it as a convenient excuse to cut ties with them.

This time would be no different.

That was why he’d deliberately scheduled the engagement party for the day Ava flew to Chicago.

The timing was just a little too perfect.

If Ava got the news and hopped the next flight back, she’d land just in time for the ceremony.

“Ethan, what if Ava actually shows up and causes trouble?”

“Yeah. You’re getting engaged. She’s going to lose her mind.”

“But she’s been pretty quiet lately.”

“You and Brooke are all over each other, and she hasn’t made a peep.”

“If this were before, she’d already be a sobbing mess.”

A long column of ash formed on the end of Ethan’s cigar, but he forgot to flick it away.

His friends’ last words echoed in his head.

Ava had been quiet lately.

So quiet it was unnerving.

But he knew her. She wasn’t the type to just let things go.

He had rejected her countless times since they were kids.

She always bounced back, more determined than before.

She was just older now, better at hiding it.

Ethan suddenly thought of something, scoffed, and stubbed out his cigar.

“Just wait. She’s never been one to let things go peacefully.”

“You think she’s going to come back and make a scene?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

But he was certain.

Ava had been a romantic dreamer since she was a little girl.

As a teenager, she was obsessed with romance novels and movies, staying up until two or three in the morning to read them.

She had tried almost every ridiculous, over-the-top trick from those stories on him.

He knew her.

Her silence was just a tactic.

He’d bet his life on it: Ava would show up before the ceremony started.

“Remind security to be on alert,” Ethan said, glancing at his watch.

“Don’t let anyone who isn’t on the list get in and ruin things.”

Just as he finished speaking, he saw Claire hiking up her skirt and running toward them.

“Ethan! It’s Ava! Her car is at the gate!”

A strange flicker of something—triumph?—shot through him before his expression hardened.

“Unbelievable. Does she have no boundaries?”

“Ethan, what do we do? If she makes a scene, the whole family will be humiliated.”

Ethan’s face was a cold mask as he strode toward the entrance.

“I’d like to see what tricks she has left to play.”
