Ethan moved out of the Whitmore estate.

He and Brooke moved in together.

The day he moved, I was at school, preparing for my senior project defense.

He’d probably chosen that day specifically to avoid me.

But this time, I didn’t run to him, crying and making a scene like I always had before.

A tight ache just radiated through my chest for a moment.

Then I took a deep breath and swallowed it down.

That evening, I went for drinks with a few classmates at the campus bar—a small pre-graduation get-together.

Halfway through the night, I went to the restroom and ran into Brooke.

“Ava, Ethan’s here too. Do you want to join us?”

I shook my head. “No, I’m with my classmates.”

Brooke’s eyes suddenly reddened.

“Ava, my family doesn’t have money. Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore aren’t exactly my biggest fans as it is.”

“Could you please stop poisoning them against me?”

I froze. The accusation was absurd.

“Brooke, I’ve never said a word about you to them.”

She gave a bitter smile. “I know you like Ethan. You’ve liked him for years.”

“I understand why you can’t accept that he’s with me now.”

“But Ava, we’re both women. Can’t we at least try to be kind to each other?”

I’m my mother’s daughter—straightforward and terrible at playing games.

Anger flared in my chest.

“Brooke, stop spreading lies about me…”

Before I could finish, Brooke’s legs gave out, and she sank to her knees.

“Ava, I’m begging you.”

Startled, I reached out to help her up.

But before I could even touch her, she collapsed onto the floor.

“Ava, what are you doing?”

Ethan’s furious voice cut through the air.

The next second, a powerful force slammed into my shoulder.

I stumbled back, my knee cracking against the corner of the wall.

Pain exploded behind my eyes, and my vision went dark.
