He Said I Was Clingy, So I Walked Away on the Day Our Contract Ended Chapter 13

I gave a small cough and fell silent. His arm slipped around my waist, wrapping around my waist like something clinging relentlessly.

Asher guided me slowly toward the bed.

“We can hold off finalizing the divorce until you recall the night you first gave yourself to me, plus how many times we were intimate that night.”

My face went hot.

“I’ve already told you I’ve got no way of recalling something that specific!”

A flicker of amusement crossed his eyes. He leaned down and brushed a light kiss over my lips.

“You can be so unapologetically bold about playing with someone’s heart and body all at once. You’re utterly adorable, Maddie.”

I stared at him, stunned.

“Asher, have I driven you completely out of your senses? Where on earth are you coming up with all these bizarre lines anyway?”

It was obvious he’d snapped after I brought up divorce. The old Asher had always been cold and distant, barely saying two words at a time.

Now he was pouring flirty suggestive lines and earnest love declarations one right after another, as if he had unlocked Pandora’s box itself, leaving me dizzy and flustered.

He took my wrist and pressed my hand against his chest, then guided my fingers to undo his shirt buttons. Finally I got a clear look at what he had on underneath, and the new genital piercing he’d recently gotten.

“I can tell from your eyes that you like it, Maddie.”

A soft laugh rumbled above me. I looked up and met his smiling gaze.

“This is meant only for my wife to enjoy. Let’s put the divorce aside for good, alright?”

I cleared my throat and let my fingers brush lightly over the swollen piercing. His smile froze.

“Then you ought to take the whole day off from your office work today…”

I pretended to study the thing in my hands, hiding how my pulse was spiking wildly from embarrassment.

“Okay.”

My legs were shaky when we went downstairs for lunch. Asher pressed a kiss to my hair and carried me toward the dining room.

I didn’t get it. At first he’d let me play with him however I wanted. How did things end up shifting completely as we went along?

“Asher.”

I leaned against his chest and poked at his firm muscle.

“If I grow tired of this arrangement eventually, would you really let me go?”

His arm tightened around my waist. A distracted answer came from above.

“You’re lying.”

I smirked. I didn’t believe him for a second.

After a long pause, he set me on the couch. The housekeeper was setting the table. He crouched at my feet, his gaze steady and earnest.

“I’ve always been a quick study, picking up any new skill easily ever since I was a kid.”

I listened.

“So I can learn every little thing you like—and things you haven’t even thought of yet. I’ll spend the rest of my life figuring out how to keep you interested.”

His voice softened.

“Or… would you be willing to try little by little, and learn to return my feelings and love me in turn?”

I stood and walked toward the table.

“We can talk about that later. I’m starving right now.”

What Asher didn’t know was that loving him would be easy.

Holding back my feelings for him, scared I’d fall for him alone inside a marriage with no clear long-term future, had been what drained me all this time.
