He Tripped Me at the Wedding So She Could Catch the Bouquet Chapter 07

“A misunderstanding?”

Ethan let out a cold laugh.

“You told your mom about Ellie’s miscarriage, twisted every detail, dropped all those hints—and you didn’t call it a misunderstanding then?”

Zoe’s mom didn’t have much experience with things like this. One push and she folded. The words just spilled out.

“I asked Zoe how come an assistant took so long just to drop something off.”

Zoe looked around the place.

Prime location. Top-tier finishes. On her own, she didn’t know how many years it would take before she could afford something like this.

Then her eyes landed on him. Standing tall not far away.

Handsome. Successful.

And she thought about the other one. Her ex-husband. The man she’d been with since college, the one who had nothing and still ended up betraying her.

Jealousy burned in her chest.

Why did she always get the short end?

She batted her eyes and turned to her mom.

“She’s got a thing for Ethan. She’s always bothering us.”

She spun one story after another. In every version, she was the one he was involved with.

Her mom, terrified of losing her meal ticket, started trashing me with every word she had.

Zoe felt a smug satisfaction rise up. “It’s fine. The second I stepped out—”

“Ethan told me not to keep you waiting. He followed me right back inside.”

“I’ve got him wrapped around my finger.”

“You’ve got me wrapped around your finger?”

Ethan let out a short, mocking laugh.

“Who the hell do you think you are?”

Zoe dug her nails into her palms, forcing herself to stay calm. But a flicker of resentment slipped through.

“So I’m just supposed to keep getting attacked like this?”

“It’s not just about me. It’s bad for you and the firm too.”

Ethan raised his hands and clapped. Slow. Deliberate.

“Should I thank you for being so thoughtful?”

But his expression stayed cold.

“Stop pretending.”

“Get the hell out.”

“You deserve the backlash. So do I. No one’s innocent here.”

“And while we’re at it—don’t worry about people talking behind your back at the office anymore.”

She froze.

“HR is sending you your termination letter today.”

Zoe’s hands balled into fists. Her voice came out strained. “On what grounds?”

Ethan glanced at her like she was nothing. Didn’t say another word.

That broke her.

“Ethan, you can’t do this to me!”

“You’re blaming my mom for hitting Ellie. You’re blaming people for coming after Ellie. You’re blaming this whole thing for blowing up in front of your family.”

“But none of this would’ve happened if it weren’t for you!”

“Wasn’t it you who tripped her at the wedding? Wasn’t it you who wasn’t there for her after?”

“You’re the one who agreed to fake being my boyfriend. You’re the one who played along in front of my parents. Did I hold a gun to your head?”

“You told me yourself—if I ever needed anything, you’d be there!”

Tears streamed down her face as she screamed. Jealousy flickered in her eyes.

“Don’t think for a second that firing me is going to make Ellie forgive you.”

“You’re dumping all the blame on me so you can walk away clean?”

“You can’t just fire me like that. I gave everything to this job. I’ll sue you!”

At the mention of my name, something in Ethan finally cracked.

He lifted his gaze.

“Before you sue me, worry about how the firm is going to sue you.”

“Zoe. How much did you skim off the company over the years? You know exactly what I’m talking about.”

His eyes were full of disgust now.

“If you hadn’t played that act—clinging to me like your life depended on it—I never would’ve helped you in the first place.”

“And then you had the nerve to want things that were never yours. You even sent Ellie those cryptic little messages.”

“Here’s what you’re going to do. Get the hell out of my life and Ellie’s life. And start getting ready for your lawsuit.”

“Because if you don’t, I’ll make sure you end up ten times worse than you are today.”

Ethan let the hate wash over him. His parents wouldn’t even see him now. Zoe was fired.

And the messages kept coming. One after another. People telling me everything.
