He Deleted My Number After 972 Messages of Love Chapter 03

The memory cut off abruptly the moment I reached the sidewalk outside my house.

Jesse stood a short distance away, his dark, still eyes fixed on me from beneath loose strands of hair falling across his forehead.

We held each other’s gaze for two seconds before he looked away.

“Oh.”

“I got the wrong house.”

I said nothing and stepped around him to keep walking.

“Sadie.”

A faint whiff of menthol cigarette smoke came off his black hoodie.

He called out to me again. ” What did you want to say in that last call you made to me a month back?”

I dodged his question entirely.

“We were completely square with each other that day.”

“We shouldn’t talk at all outside of school from now on.”

Jesse let out a quiet laugh.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

“We’re nothing more than classmates now.”

“My bad for intruding, Sadie.”

His footsteps faded away. His tall figure stretched a long slanted shadow beneath the streetlight, little by little blending into the gathering twilight.

After that sudden, unannounced breakup, I went through those days feeling completely out of it. I zoned out through most of my classes those days.

To make things worse, my menstrual cycle started earlier than usual.

A dull, dragging ache settled low in my stomach, and a pounding migraine kicked in right alongside it.

I forced myself to finish my end-of-day classroom cleanup, and I ended up being the only person left on the whole floor. Doubled over with cramps, I folded forward onto my desk.

Without thinking, I called Jesse.

“Hello?”

It was Jesse’s familiar clear voice.

Right afterward, another female voice grew louder on the line.

“Hey, can I answer this for Jesse?”

A beat passed.

“Sadie, is that you?”

“Did you need Jesse for something? He’s right here, so just say it. He can hear you fine.”

I snapped most of the way back to reality.

I hung up on my own, hunched over the desk waiting for the worst of the pain to subside before forcing myself upright to leave.

The campus security guard looked surprised when he spotted me.

“Wow, I didn’t expect anyone to still be here this late.”

I tried to force a smile, but I couldn’t manage it.
