He Brought Me a College Guy, Saying I’d Never Touch Him—But I Kept Him Chapter 13

“How dare you, Isabella.”

The shout came out raw, wounded. Cassidy hurried over to look.

She saw two names on the invitation.

Isabella Reed and Julian Ashford.

Her face changed too.

“Nate, this has to be a joke. She knows the divorce isn’t real. You’re getting back together.”

“And besides, Julian hasn’t even graduated yet. What guy wants to get married that young?”

Her words calmed Nathaniel down a little.

His grip on the invitation loosened.

But then Cassidy’s tone shifted, like she was thinking out loud.

“Unless,” she said carefully, “unless that night you sent him to her, he did something that made her lose her head.”

“Shut up.”

Nathaniel slapped her across the face. The crack of it echoed through the room.

“Isabella would never touch him.”

Cassidy held her cheek, too stunned to cry.

Nathaniel didn’t look at her again. He walked out.

He remembered now. When he called earlier, the person on the phone said the bride was getting her touch up.

The bride. Was it her?

No. Impossible.

She was just trying to get back at him for divorcing her over Cassidy.

Marry some guy she’d known for a few days?

Isabella wasn’t like that.

She had boundaries. She wouldn’t touch those guys. Wouldn’t even hold their hands.

Before, when he brought girls home to make her angry, she did the same thing.

She’d ignore him for a few days, then suddenly cause a scene.

Stay out all night. Take calls from other men in front of him on purpose.

And every time, it gave him this sick sense of satisfaction.

This was the same thing.

When he got there, he’d probably find her sitting alone in the bridal suite, waiting for him to come get her.

And he’d tease her. “Isabella, aren’t you too old for this?”

She’d probably glare at him with red eyes, then look away without saying anything.

He’d say a few nice words, and it would all blow over.

Yeah. That was it.

He talked himself through it as he drove.

Then another image flashed through his mind.

That day Cassidy disappeared because she wanted a commitment.

He went to her school to find her.

And Julian had stood in front of him, volunteering himself.

“Mr. Hawthorne, I heard you always hire a male student to keep your wife company when you smooth things over. I need money. Do you think I could work for you?”

At this school in town, Nathaniel had hired a few guys to keep Isabella occupied.

Because he knew she’d never touch them, he only picked the best-looking ones.

Julian was the best looking and had the best grades. Nathaniel remembered being pretty satisfied.

At least she couldn’t say he didn’t put in effort.

Back then, he just thought the kid knew how things worked. Take the money, do the job.

Now, thinking back, that look in his eyes wasn’t right.

Nathaniel didn’t know how to describe it. But now, it made him uneasy.

He pulled up to Meadowhill Estate. Pushed the door open and walked in.

The wedding was decorated simply. Clean.

The first person he saw was Derek.

“Nate?”
