He Faked His Death And I Came For Our Daughter’s Ashes Chapter 06

“Do you have a problem with that?”

Brandon stood in the living room, his eyes red, his chest heaving.

Celeste’s tone shifted instantly, soft and wounded.

“Brandon, that’s not what I meant…”

“Mandy came looking for something, and I said it might have gotten lost when you helped me move in. But she got upset and started saying awful things, and I just panicked…”

This time, Brandon didn’t look at her.

He didn’t scold me for fighting with Celeste like he used to.

His voice shook. “Mandy, we’ll find the plush toy. If we don’t, I couldn’t face seeing Tessa.”

“Tessa?”

Kelly popped her head out from behind a handheld gaming console. She looked confused. “Mom, didn’t you say Tessa is dead? You told me I’m Mr. Hart’s real sweetheart now.”

The room went quiet for a moment.

Celeste shouted at her to shut up, her voice shaking. “Kids say the dumbest things.”

Kelly pouted and muttered, “Well, it’s better that she’s dead. Now I don’t have to share.”

It was an ugly mix of childish innocence and pure cruelty.

Brandon’s face turned pale. So did Celeste’s.

But I just smiled.

I wasn’t surprised at all.

“Is that what your mother taught you to say?”

Kelly shrank back, terrified by the look in Celeste’s eyes.

“She’s only six,” Celeste stammered. “She just… she sees things online. Kids copy everything.”

Tears welled up in Celeste’s eyes. She reached for Brandon’s sleeve.

“Brandon, please believe me… I never… I would never do that.”

The next second, he shoved her hand away.

He had never done that before.

“So you already knew Tessa was dead.”

“I only found out afterward… and Kelly was hurt that day too!”

“Shut up!”

His eyes were bloodshot. His whole body trembled. After a long pause, he pointed to the door.

“Leave. I’ll have my assistant book you a hotel.”

Kelly burst into tears. Celeste sobbed, clutching her daughter.

In the past, Brandon would have softened when they cried. He would have accused me of being too harsh.

But now he just called his assistant to pick them up.

“Brandon, you can’t do this to me. You promised my father you would take care of me.”

He paused. He didn’t answer.

Celeste, her eyes wet, threw herself at him and pressed her head against his chest.

“Brandon, do you really think a single mother with a daughter would move into your house just to be roommates? How shameless is that?”

“The first time you came to my house with Mandy, I already liked you.”

“You said it yourself, I was pretty, smart, and sophisticated. If I had met you before her, you would have been mine. We belong together.”

Brandon gently pushed her away. “If you had met me earlier, you wouldn’t have liked me at all. I was a delinquent who couldn’t even spell ‘cat.'”
